Apologies if this is in the wrong forum.

I've rolled stats, and starting gold. Stats are easy enough, but I'm trying to make the equipment of this character match his background. Stats are: str10, dex13, con11, int11, wis16, cha15.

His name is Paheim
--------------
Elaina was a young human woman who married a man named Pellyn, a priest of St. Cuthbert. They had one son, named Joergon. Pellyn was killed when Joergon was still quite small. Elaina struggled on her own, living with the help of other villagers.

When Joergon was two, Elaina was raped by an elf that was passing through the village. This resulted in her having another son, whom she named Senin. Shortly after the birth of Senin, she became ill, and while she did get over the illness itself, it left her weak, and never fully recovered her health. She died with the boys were aged eight and five.

With no one else to take the children in, Pellyn’s father sent the boys off to be looked after by the priests of St. Cuthbert. He is also a priest of St. Cuthbert, and felt that the children would be looked after better by the church as a whole, than they would be by him alone.

Within the monastery Senin’s name was changed to Paheim, and he was often treated badly due to his slow ability to learn. Of course, this was not a reflection on his ability, merely a factor of his elven heritage that he should grow and learn so much more slowly than his human brethren.

There were no other elves or half elves at the monastery, so Paheim quickly became left behind by his brother and by his peers. He was often punished for getting things wrong, or being too slow. The priests adopted the approach of telling him that he was worthless and he should expect to live a pitiful life, which would amount to nothing. They taught him in this way to be humble, to obey the law, and to always be faithful to St. Cuthbert.

In this way he grew to be humble and meek, expecting nothing and receiving less. His very demeanour is that of someone who is depressive and downtrodden. He takes a negative view on nearly everything, and stares at the ground a lot. He has no interests other than religion and law.

Paheim was always a bit of a lost cause in the eyes of the priests. When he finally left the monastery he was assigned back to the village he had been born in, to work under the aging priest who lived there. The priest, Kellin, remembered Paheim as a little boy, and told him what he could remember of his mother, and of the man she was married to.

Paheim lived and worked with the old priest, performing his tasks without complaint. Eventually Kellin died, and Paheim took over the running of the village church. As a curate and preacher, he was unexciting. He did his duties with little relish or fervour.

The village was burnt down, and Paheim began to question his purpose in life. Now he had no village, and no church to look after. As he didn’t know what to do, and all the people of the village moved onto other places, he decided that he should return to a monastery or a larger temple to receive instructions.

So he collected up his humble possessions and began his journey...

He eats little more than bread and water.
He tithes heavily to his church, believing that his own life is worth nothing other than to serve his god.
Paheim only understands the world as he was taught, so teaches others to follow St. Cuthbert, and to live humbly, donating their lives to their god in the same way that he does. He is inclined to tell people that they are worthless much as he was told over and over during his years in the monastery.

The problem is, he should start out with very little indeed, which makes his chances of surviving a first adventure (or battle for that matter) pretty slim.
Here is the equipment I've considered so far:
Club
Padded armour
Sling
Small wooden shield
Silver Holy Symbol (saved from his temple - to be swapped for a wooden one later)
torches
food (bread, waterskins)
basket (for carrying food etc)
donkey

I rolled 140 gold.
The story suggests that most of that belongs to the church, and he would donate it back to the church when he finds one.

Has anybody got any suggestions of how I can make him more survivable without ruining his background and personallity?

Zustiur.
