Help me figure out Spycraft...

First Post
I did the unthinkable. I bought a suppliment without buying the games handbook. Needle3ss to say, I'm just a bit lost.

I bought a Spycraft suppliment dealing with weapons (Modern Arms Guide). I understand most of it, but the technical terms for actions, action points, as well as some of the finer detail elude me. Can any of you fine folks tell me how Spycraft differs from the basic d20 system?

Er, okay. First off, keep in mind that MAG is a 1.0 supplement. It's not for the current edition. I trust you were after it just for the weapons, not the game.

Action dice - spycraft provides action dice, 3-6 per session or so, depending on level. The sides on the dice rolled also depend on level, ranging from d4 to d12 IIRC. You can add them to just about any d20 based roll. You can also spend them for inspiration checks and other benefits. Finally, crit confirmation is not random; it requires you spend an action dice.

The game uses a Vitality Point / Wound Point system like star wars

There are no move and standard actions in spycraft. There are full round actions and half actions. Either half action in a round can be a move or an attack. There are also no iterative attacks.

Er, what else confuses you?

The was a free Spycraft Lite download avaialble when Spycraft first came out - it may still be available though I'm not sure

An off-topic question; do they have a book for vehicles?

AEG never published a vehicle supplement for Spycraft. The corerulebook's gear section was pretty comprehensive.

Spycraft II has a gear section that is evem more comprehensive than the original (includes vehicles) and includes robust rules for customization. If you like what you've seen so far you may want to check out the newer version. The .pdf of the second printing of Spycraft 2 is now available.

One of the reviewers at rpgnow is mistaken in his belief that the discounted Spycraft 2 hardcover on Amazon is the same as the .pdf he purchased.

How is the PDF different from the hardcover then?

The hardcover, published in 2005 is an AEG production and while great (I own it), represents the first printing of Spycraft 2.0. That is the item available at Amazon.com for the discounted price.

The Spycraft 2.0 2nd Printing .pdf (May 2006), was produced by the new company Crafty Games and incorporates all known errata from the first printing as well as numerous rules clarifications. They also significantly re-organized the gear chapter to make it more user-friendly as customer feedback from the first printing indicated that as the number one complaint.

The Spycraft 2.0, 2nd Printing Hardcover will be available in August of this year and will be identical to the .pdf.

Hope that clears things up.
