Help me fill out a temple treasury!

Carnifex

First Post
My Planescape face-to-face game is currently taking place on the prime world which two of the PC's come from; at the moment they're in a temple up in the mountains, dedicated to a deity called Haephestus who is a fire/forge/metalworking type god. They're there to try and acquire the Hammer, a relic of that religion, since their country is currently in a bit of trouble and Rule-Of-Three (a cambion) has promised them troops of they get him the hammer.

All well and good. But they got to this isolated temple in the mountains to find that a tribe of bog trogs (from the Monsternomicon) under the influence of a glabrezu and vrock have attacked the temple, and turned its complex passageways and rooms into a battlefield. The priests are holed up in some areas still, and the bog trogs have just broken into the inner sanctum where the Hammer is kept. The PC's have just eliminated the bog trog command group (the tribe chief, witch doctor, and tracker) and the next encounter will be with the group of trogs ransacking the temple treasury (the demons have gone on ahead to the hammer, where they'll be attacked by baatezu special forces troops ;) ).

I don't expect the trogs (6 trogs and two trogs with a barbarian level) to last very long, as the party wizard is itching to get a chance for his newly acquired fireball spell. Also, since bog trogs generally don't have much cool gear, I want the treasury to provide the loot for the party to compensate for its lack throughout the rest of the adventure. The party have no particular tie to the priests (one is even an Athar) so they wont feel bad about taking the temple's treasures.

Thing is, I'm not sure what to put in the treasury. Some silverware temple ornaments (candlesticks etc) and some cash, as well as some healing potions. But does anyone have any other good ideas for magic items I could put in for a wizard, two rogues and a psionic warrior, keeping in mind it should probably fit with the deity's theme?

Salutations,

How about:

a pair of heavy leather forging gloves that are immune to heat and fire

a leather apron that gives fire resistance (5) that stacks with other fire resistances

an everburning forge (cuts cost of making weapons/armor)

an anvil that causes all weapons made on it to be of masterwork quality (or just gives a nice competence bonus to appropriate craft checks)

a manual that gives details on how to craft different exotic weapons

a whetstone that makes a weapon keen for an hour (only works once a day)

Good luck
SD

edit: Since I have been on a goggle kick with characters, a pair of goggles that protect against blindness.

Carnifex, what levels are the PCs?

Heh, I just realised I didn't say what level tehy were in my first post :o #

The wizard is lvl 5, the halfling Sensate rogue lvl 5, the shadow-touched tiefling psionic warrior level 4 (lvl 5 including +1ECL) and the Athar human rogue lvl 3.

SOme mithral or other "fancy" metal weapons or armor. MAybe a gold sword or silver battle axe (use the rules from magic of faerun)

MAsterwork metal armor.

Small pieces of worked metal that explode into pieces and do damage like a grenade weapon (use acid in the PHB) as a guide.

A helmet that provides a deflection bonus to AC AND acts as light fortifaction (thats spelled wrong) to criticals.

Scrolls of heat metal, produce flame, flaming sphere, continual flame, or other fire spells.

Potion of Fire breath.

or Books that give a competence bonus to Craft (-smith).

*Shameless Plug*

Let me bust out a few quick ideas derived from my new work, the Enchiridion of Treasures and Objects d'Art.

Focus: fire/forge/metalworking type god so a focus on metal objects.

Just for fun, I will be timing this exercise - because I want to see how long this takes.

Current time (by my wristwatch, PST: 11:31 am)

Here we go:

1.) A bronze chain shirt created by a crafter with a +8 to Craft checks.
(wt. 20 lb, AC Bonus +4, value 150 gp)

time to create: about 1 minute

2.) An ensorcelled shortsword made of allanite (a gem) created by a crafter with a +15 to Craft checks; half of the damage the sword does cannot be healed via fast healing or regeneration.
(wt. 1 lb., Hardness 11, blade's hit points 7, mundane value 1010 gp; value with magic 3010 gp).

time to create: about 3 minutes

3.) A large shield made of ensorcelled nickel, and enhanced with the reduced weight component and bearing an inlay of ensorcelled rainbow obsidian - engrave DC of 14; (EDIT: Weight of shield is 3 pounds).

The ensorcelled nickel provides the shield with the following ability:
[The shield] provides its bearer with a limited ability to deflect incoming electrical attacks. The character must hold a weapon or shield make of ensorcelled nickel to attempt to deflect such an attack; this is done by making a Reflex Save versus the DC the spell would normally have. The character must declare that he is attempting to deflect the attack after he is announced as a target (or in the area of effect) but before the attack roll (if any) is made to see if the electricity would hit. If the saving throw is successful, the electricity is harmlessly deflected. If the saving throw is failed, the character is automatically hit by the attack, even if the original attack would have missed. The character may instead attempt to re-direct the spell to strike a specific target; this
requires a Reflex save against 10 + the normal save DC for the spell. The new target may not be in range; calculate the range to the new target by adding the range from the origination of the electric effect to the deflecting character and the the range from the deflecting character to the new target. If the attempt to deflect the attack to a new target is successful, the deflecting character gets to make the touch attack roll on the new target, though with a -2 circumstance penalty.

And the ensorcelled rainbow obsidian gives:
[the shield's bearer] darkvision; furthermore, the bearer may see in magical darkness with this darkvision ability.

(mundane value: 34 gp for the shield, 60 gp for the reduced weight, 168 gp for the engraving, 1500 gp for inlaying 3/10ths of a pound of rainbow obsidian; total mundane value is 1,762gp plus an added 6,750 gp for magical properties for a total value of 8,512 gp)

TIME! 11:41... ten minutes. (I guess the shield took about 6 minutes) There you go. Three "freebies" from my new work that I just made up as I was typing this post. While the chain shirt may not be overwhelming, I think the shortsword and especially the shield will prove rather unique. :)

And it gives me a chance to "show off" my new book. ;-b

Thanks, The Sigil, the shield in particular is quite cool, though I'm not quite sure what the point of knowing the crafters craft skill bonus is?

1 - Flavor item

2 - If you assume the current residents of the temple are the ones who stock the treasury, you have an upper limit on what kinds of items they make, based on the upper limit of the Craft skill ranks any of the priests/craftsmen has. Frex, in a dwarven stronghold, you expect to see much more complex items than in a half-orc one. IOW, if the temple is populated by great craftsmen, you could see a lot of really complex/intricate items. If it is populated by those who (a) are not as skilled or (b) collect but do not create, the "value cap" might be considerably lower. It's a verisimilitude thing.

Well, the Haephestan priests' temple is made of redstone and metal, and they have rudimentary electrical power to run lights and ventilation from a waterwheel. There was a high level cleric in the place as well but he was killed by the glabrezu; also they have many old relics of the faith so pretty much any level of craftsmanship is possible.
