Seeing as theyre lowbies,
Maybe a ring that gives a bit of heat resist, +1 saves and a +1 to a crafting skill of some sort. Maybe not the most exciting of toys but at least it would be something that isnt in the DMG.

Well, they may just be level 5 but I kind of get the feeling they're a bit underequipped in terms of the cash value of their magic items; the Athar is a enw character after his previous character (a Loki priest) died, and has no magic items whatsoever...

Don't give them gold and silver coins. Instead let them find raw steel adamant and mithril. Maybe they find enough adamant for 2 light weapons of their choice to be made and enough mithril for 2 chain shirts or a breastplate. Then they must find someone who is skilled enough to work the metal (maybe the guy they are getting the hammer for.) Or if you have magic of ferun they might have some of the more exotic metals.
