Help me find balance

Beholder Bob

First Post
I'm modifying the Hex Warrior from the complete warrior, and am hoping for feedback - is this too powerful....

Drop HD to d8, base attack to 3/4 (as cleric), gain good fort save, skills stay the same, gain spells per day as bard.

Gain casting of spells in medium armor at 7th. The warmage gets it and seems to me to be less of a armor user then this class.

Additional limit: any spell with a save of (harmless) effects 1/2 as many creatures, round up.

Well - is he over the top? Reasonable? I felt the spells gained to minor to be worth giving up med/hvy armor, so I bumped up the spells. I downgraded his beneficial spells for his allies since he is curse based - generally not the guy you want casting spells on you.

Would you allow him in your game?

Doesn't really seem to be any problems to me. Armour/medium is not that valuable unless you allow someone with it and not armour/heavy to use mithril plate (the only good "medium" armour). Even then, it might not be that much of a problem.

The limitation on (harmless) spells is pretty cool, actually. Gives good flavour to the class. All in all, I'd allow the class, but probably not let them use mithril plate.

The good stuff

Here's the spell list. I've got almost no damage dealing spells listed, instead aiming for a mostly deabilitating focus and some buffs. No teleport, diminsion door, little/no summoning, almost no divination, no evocation, etc. Throw into this mix his reduced ability to buff allies (which bears mention of the # effected having a minimum of 1 creature), he is poor at providing support (like the bard or cleric) or dealing direct damage (like the wizard or sorcerer), but is good at impairing foes and retains decent combat abilities. Hopefully, the flavor intended comes across w the spell list.

Yup, looks good to me.... Are you letting people use mithral heavy armor in conjunction with the wearing medium armor ability??? If so... that make it a little better, but still reasonable i guess.

Big ups on the spell list too buddy!

Random Hero: Cool! Thanks for the feedback. Any armor that qualifies as medium can be worn w/out spell failure, so mithral heavy = medium. Then again, thats pretty darn expensive, so what the heck. Did the spell list maintain a good flavor? Did anything stick out as inappropriate?

Ok, the final version being used

Medium armor proficiency (but with spell failure)
HD d8
Base attack as cleric
Good will & fort save
spells known & castable as bard
and at 7th: No spell failure when casting hex blade spells while in medium armor
