get rid of combat expertise.

take 5 ranks in tumble instead.

the synergy bonus with other skills makes it more useful. and now you have a feat to spend on something else...
like dodge or mobility

Make your fighter a dwarf, then enter the Dwarven Defender class. +1 AC at 1st, 4th, 7th, & 10. And +4 AC from dwarven stance.

Oh, and +4 AC vs. Giants.

I did this with a spiked chain trip-smacking dwarf who always put 5 points into AC from Expertise. He was a living wall.

Just in case 3 or 4 mentions isn't enough, Alter Self is the premiere high-AC enabling spell.

Low level (2nd), high duration (10 min/level), incredible bonus (+6) and, best yet, it isn't an enhancement, it makes your natural AC +6. So if you have a +2 NA enchantment, your total after alter self is +8 due to NA.

Good stuff.

It would be more-or-less trivially easy to grant an Eldritch knight type wizard/fighter combo a truly sick AC using this spell and a few trinkets.

Alter Self is great unless you don't want to walk around as a smell troglodyte.
Really the optimal stuff is a bit of everything and LOTs of dodge. Dodge bonuses stack unlike most bonuses and so never conflict.

I am trying to get my AC as high as possible. At first level this means a tower shield, combat expertise, and chainmail for my fighter.

I wouldn't take combat expertise at 1st level. Its limited by your BAB. So its great for 4-5th level. And with improved combat expertise great for high levels. But at 1st level , your better off taking dodge.
