Also, if you take the alternate Paladin of Freedom class feature from Unearthed Arcana, you can be a Chaotic Good Paladin/Bard without blowing a feat... thought the DM may still stick you with rules silliness.

Main point of Devoted Performer isn't even the alignment thing to me, it'd be the class feature level stacking. I do think Bardic Inspire Courage should be a main component of the build if you're doing the rapper idea, though it could just be something you do for no mechanical purpose, I think it'd be more enjoyable if dissing your foes gave your allies bonuses.

What class combo would be ideal for buffing and tanking?

Cleric, to be honest.

And the sad part is, Cleric can even grab much of the Paladin's toys with a tiny class feature swap.

Somehow even more sad? With all the broken things you can do with your turn attempts, most would probably consider trading Turn Undead for all that to be a BAD idea!
