Portals & Planes can be used on it's own or as a compaion for WotC's Manual of the Planes.

Or along with Ronin Arts' DM's Directory of Demiplanes -- which is now shipping to stores.

I just got a gift certificate that I can use to buy some books, and would like some ideas on what to get. I mainly am looking for alternate rule or rule expansion type books as I already have a great many settings.

I have given the new Demon Hunters Handbook a couple of glances online, has anyone been able to look through it yet.
I've also been looking around for a good book dealing with elemental type casters and or races.

The mongoose books, classic play Book of planes, immortals, and hell look interesting, but don't know much about those.
Well it seems you might be looking for some kind of fiendish supplement (among other things), so I'll second Psion's recommendation of Green Ronin's Book of Fiends - it's well worth checking out. The best thing to do might be to check out the reviews, and maybe the pdf preview and art gallery at the publisher's site. . . and really, that goes for any book you're considering buying from anywhere.

By the way, when you say "alternate rule", how alternate a ruleset would you be looking at trying out? . . . because personally, I think there are some good complete d20/OGL systems out there. Like say, Arcana Evolved from Malhavoc Press.

I bought it on a whim for $5 and seriously. I'd happily pay more, if for just the Mingling and Malignancy rules. Those are cool. :)

Are you talking about the one from Goodman Games? Because I wrote that one.

I enjoyed writing it, that's for sure - probably my favorite project, over all (except maybe for the DCC 18: Citadel of the Demon Prince, or the Visions books for Ronin Arts).

It's got lots of little rules bits for demons and demon hunters, some rules for organizations (cults and so on), some new spells and items, and a whole bunch of campaign advice for players and for DMs.

It's also got some nasty, nasty, nasty demons. And a demonic orphanage that exists on multiple planes.

And so on. I'm quite pleased with it, all told.
