Heck, you could just model some of the more iconic episodes in Fantasy fiction out there.

For example:

Start them off as locals & travellers in a small village (or a travelling caravan) beset by a party of raiders. After fending off the attack (in which much of the village is leveled) reveal that the village's Headman's daughter has been abducted. The PCs respond to the offered reward and set out after the raiders. They get a random encounter with something along the trail...maybe they find a pretty shiny thing in the process.

Etc.

Like I said, bribery should also be considered. ;)

The first thing that popped into my mind when I read the title of this thread was: pizza.

Free food opens doors. You know, just like Hansel & Gretel.

I would keep it simple and straight-forward at this stage. The minis + plot may be a way to go (I think the D&D Basic Games takes this approach).

I was thinking beer myself. But each to his/her own.

I always did it like that:
Invite them for a weekend afternoon. Good wine, food, beer, whatever. Run them (and perhaps others) through a nice beginners adventure (I've been using Wizards Amulet since years).

Make it a one shot.

I did it four times so far and someone always wanted to start a regular group.
