Help me with an evil cleric!

WarlockLord

First Post
I need an evil 9th level cleric to challenge my PCs. He's supposed to be the evil king they are supposed to assassinate. I have no idea how to build a cleric, so I put this to you.

Thanks in advance.

Are you looking for spell use, stats, feats? a complete NPC?

Have a look at the Rogues Gallery forum, it might have what you want or give you a start.

What books are you limiting yourself to?

I'm not going to provide many stats/feats/combos (others can do much better) so I'll ask some Q's to get you thinking:

Some ideas and thoughts.
Undead the king has created that are loyal only to him. As many as he can create/control. Use feats that boost the amount and or power of undead
As many golems that the kingdom/king can afford, commanded only by the king.
Any summoned/called/allied outsiders? what about fanatical followers? (And on that note, who will NOT rush to the king's aid??)

Undead, golems parked throughout the king's personal chambers to protect him from intuders.

One thing that is often overlooked (maybe on purpose) is that the kning will have the best of EVERYTHING he can get and not just a $$ amount based on level. So even at ninth level he could have weapons and armour of +10 equivelent (he is evil, so potentially he doesn't trust anybody). The best WIS boosting item, protection items for everything and worn everywhere including up the wazoo. :D Unless the party take the king out without alerting anyone, they will likely not have time to take more than anything easily grabable before needing to run.

Other than being an evil king, any themes that you want to follow? Who is the king's deity (or conept) and what domains does he have?

He is a deity of the ONE, the all-powerful monotheistic god (and the only god in my homebrew). I was thinking any theme that would allow him to bring harm to others and aid himself - human sacrifice, vampiric touch-esque spells, etc. He focuses on necromancy.

One thing I would recommend is taking at least one feat that uses turn/rebuke uses. There's one called Divine Metamagic (IIRC) that allows you to use rebukes to apply metamagic effects, which can be especially useful if you also take Extra Turning feats.

Sounds like a natural for the Pact and Death domains. Is he supposed to work in a standup fight, or is this a sneaky ambush type thing?

I would actually equip him pretty close to his level. For one thing, the PCs are going to loot his corpse, and for another, just because he is king does not mean the treasury has unlimited funds for him to carry around a rating +10 weapon for jollies. Rather, his wealth and power should be reflected in his followers.

Bring out good old Divine Spell Power, and apply it to a persistent Divine Power. (You need Divine Metamagic, of course.) Also DSP something like Magic Vestment to get his AC up.

You might want to consider giving him maybe 1 level dip in fighter, so he wield some nasty weapons wihtout having to use up feats.

He could spend one feat on EWP: Bastard Sword and use a tower shield (+4AC) in the other hand (although at -2 to hit). Give him access to the Destruction domain for a nasty smite, and Death for a death touch once he has damaged someone. If you are using non-core books, combine Destruction domain with the Extra Smite feat from CW.
