Help me with this warlord-sage idea

JPL

Adventurer
Raised by his grandfather, a respected if minor scholar based in Candlekeep, Tobias was blessed with a keen intellect and a voracious appetite for knowledge. He took a special interest in the adventurers who frequently consulted his grandfather, and absorbed every detail of their tales of derring-do.

When a less-scrupulous party of adventurers murdered his grandfather and stole his precious books of lore, Tobias formulated a plan to bring them to justice. Studying rare tomes on tactics and the art of the sword and practicing incessantly, the young scholar transformed himself into formidable warrior. He set out to find allies, relying on his razor-keen mind to stay one step ahead of his foes.

Just got my PHB yesterday. Any thoughts about how to stat this guy out?

Well, it sounds like he's a human, although you might consider half-elf or tiefling (since one parent could be an elf or tiefling, and tieflings breed true with humans). The human extra at will does work nicely with Warlord, since all of the at-wills are potentially useful for all builds. Both the extra at will and the half elf dilettante abilities work nicely for "an extra trick he found in those old books." Ditto the human feat and extra trained skill. The tiefling score bumps are both useful for a Warlord. I would definitely take History as one of the trained skills.

Priorities: Str, Int, Cha (even if you take mostly Int attacks, it still helps your healing and gives some more options), Dex (for a number of useful feats; could switch in order w/ Cha, though that will hurt Will saves), Con, Wis

Attacks: All of the at wills are consistent with "pointing out to your new friends the things you learned from the books," except Furious Smash; on the other hand, I really like Furious Smash. (Maybe he gets "furious" thinking about the scum who killed his grandfather! ;) But either way, you'd need a decent Charisma...) If you're a half-elf, you could get a similar return from Righteous Brand (Cleric 1) with or without high Charisma, although it will be 1/encounter. Warlord's Favor is consistent with your flavor, although you shouldn't discount Hammer and Anvil, since it can do plenty of damage, depending on your party. For the Daily, I'd go with Lead the Attack, since the flavor focuses in instructions, and it takes extra advantage of your Int.
