Help my "cousin" Bob fit in?

Rojek

First Post
I am currently playing in a homebrew campaign as a mage and my DM is allowing me to use a skeleton as a type of cohort, (I intend to summon a normal one and then take the leadership feat when I can to then make him more powerful).

One of the problems I have is that every day common folk aren't going to have a very positive attitude towards someone walking around with a skeleton in tow and I need ideas as to how I can disguise him? I intend to try and pass him off as a relative, say my cousin; let's call him Bob.

I probably won't want to attempt this until I reach 5th level when I think some of the ideas, (well one anyway), can come into effect.

Some information about my character to help you help me is as follows:-

1. I am a 3rd level mage specialising in the school of necromancy.
2. My barred schools are illusion, (not helpful I know), and evocation.
3. My feats aren't of any use I believe, (Spell Focus, Spell Penetration and Brew Potion), however my DM might let me change the one I took at 3rd level for something else.
4. I was thinking of saving up for a hat of disguise but magic items are not readily available in this campaign so it could be some time before I can acquire one even if I do have the money.
5. One idea I thought was good and the main reason I wanted to wait until I reached 5th level was because my rat familiar gains the ability to speak to its master ie. me. What I then intend to do is make a nice little cosy rat nest inside the skull of my skeleton cohort and my cohort now has a voice. Now I know this isn't perfect because only I can understand my familiar however this could easily be passed off as some sort of strange speak we developed as kids because he couldn’t learn how to speak common? I was also wondering if my familiar could then give commands to the cohort in order to make him move etc?

Looking at it so far this whole idea hinges on me obtaining a hat of disguise and that’s where you lot hopefully come in? What else could I possibly do to pull this stunt off?

I have played with someone that had a skeleton familiar for her Necromancer.. she had him in full plate and passed him off as her bodyguard (he was intelligent, however, and could speak although it was very hoarse. DM houseruled a bit for her.. she took Improved Familiar I believe to make him better than normal)

Swap out your rat for a raven.
Put Bob in full plate.
Put your raven in Bob.

I didn't think of full plate armour! :) By fifth level I could probably afford some of that which would go a long way to disguise "Bob" for the most part. Even a very good spot check shouldn't be able to see past that at my level and maybe a few more after.

Why the raven though?

I like the idea of a skeleton familiar and it would obviously make my idea so much easier to implement however I'm concerned that it would not be potent enough at later levels whereas a cohort would. I could be wrong so I'll have to check out what Improved Familiar does. Could you tell me please where I might find that rule?

Maybe I could combine familiar with cohort?

Improved Familiar just gives you a better familiar (there are several versions of it, in DMG and Complete Warrior). It didn't actually do anything for her, she spent the feat in exchange for the DM basically houseruling her companion to be stronger than a normal skeleton. I believe he let it progress like a druid's animal companion because at 6th level he had like 5HD and was pretty good in combat with a scythe.

The special power of a raven is to speak one language out loud; so you could have it speak common. I would also pay extra to make sure that the plate armor fits properly. Remember that people who wear plate have muscles and flesh, and it is designed to sit on it. In addition play off "Bob" as to having a very low intelligence, this way it will not see odd that you tell him to sit down or any other orders.

Creative use of magic mouth spells could help as well. Pay someone else to cast them as its your barred school.

Also, Enchantments can be your friend. You might be able to make people like you so much that they are willing to look the other way about your strange "cousin."
