I am currently playing in a homebrew campaign as a mage and my DM is allowing me to use a skeleton as a type of cohort, (I intend to summon a normal one and then take the leadership feat when I can to then make him more powerful).
One of the problems I have is that every day common folk aren't going to have a very positive attitude towards someone walking around with a skeleton in tow and I need ideas as to how I can disguise him? I intend to try and pass him off as a relative, say my cousin; let's call him Bob.
I probably won't want to attempt this until I reach 5th level when I think some of the ideas, (well one anyway), can come into effect.
Some information about my character to help you help me is as follows:-
1. I am a 3rd level mage specialising in the school of necromancy.
2. My barred schools are illusion, (not helpful I know), and evocation.
3. My feats aren't of any use I believe, (Spell Focus, Spell Penetration and Brew Potion), however my DM might let me change the one I took at 3rd level for something else.
4. I was thinking of saving up for a hat of disguise but magic items are not readily available in this campaign so it could be some time before I can acquire one even if I do have the money.
5. One idea I thought was good and the main reason I wanted to wait until I reached 5th level was because my rat familiar gains the ability to speak to its master ie. me. What I then intend to do is make a nice little cosy rat nest inside the skull of my skeleton cohort and my cohort now has a voice. Now I know this isn't perfect because only I can understand my familiar however this could easily be passed off as some sort of strange speak we developed as kids because he couldn’t learn how to speak common? I was also wondering if my familiar could then give commands to the cohort in order to make him move etc?
Looking at it so far this whole idea hinges on me obtaining a hat of disguise and that’s where you lot hopefully come in? What else could I possibly do to pull this stunt off?
