Help needed please

I am no lawyer, but my understanding of copyright is doing anything to make money off of someone elses work, or claiming it as your own. Scanning and sending copies of pages of something they already own is not a violation of the law, at least that I remember reading. No one is going to feed a blood sucking lawyer over a few "grey area" pages of possible/doubtful copyright infringement anyway.

Bloodsucking lawyer here. I am not a copyright lawyer, but I have studied the subject and am familiar with it. You are correct that making money off someone else's work, or claiming it as your owh, would probably be a violation of copyright. But you need to add distribution to your list. Otherwise, one could destroy someone else's ability to make money off of a particular work by distributing, at no charge, copies of their work. This is the situation with music downloads.

Copying a couple of pages as a "backup" for a friend might be what is called "fair use", or it might be simply too minor of a violation to warrant the involvement of any "bloodsucking" lawyers. No offense to zoran, but when someone very new to the boards shows up asking for scans of copyrighted material it makes people a little concerned, and rightfully so. Zoran is probably telling the truth, and I hope he has a friend who can help him out, but a public messageboard is not the place to ask for this kind of help.

You also can't distrubute, whether you make money or not, because that prevents the guy who actually made it from making money. Music and Video downloads are an example along with the bootleg CDs and Videos you may have heard about.
