Help our party get out of a bad mess.

If your wizard has access to any of the Polymorph spells, have him cast it and transform himself/someone else into an Ankheg. Then just dig your own way out.

Gaseous form. 3rd level spell. Use as many higher level slots as needed to prepare it 11 times. Extend it if you can. Go out their ventilation system. Invisibility, fly, gust of wind, mage armor in any remaining slots to speed up the escape and keep from being too vulnerable to their elites (who may have magic weapons).

The plan is coming together.

The wizard will cast polymorph self and turn into an Ankheg. He will also use a polymorph other spell on one of the people we need to rescue and turn him into an Ankheg. Thats a way out.

We explore the mines. The DM has told us only one room is a partial magic zone, so prying eyes to explore as well as detect secret doors and the best searchers go out.

I will post what happens to the party after we get there. The next session will be this coming Saturday.

If anyone can think of something better please do.

Also since we are getting a lot of snow it is doubtful we will play this weekend so for anyone wanting to know what happens. One more week.

In other word...Bump

What´s wrong with the different polymorph ideas? I think that the Ankheg solution is pretty nifty myself.
What happened that made you change your minds?

Point 1: This sure sounds like an emergency to me....

Point 2: Does the wizard know Shadow Walk? That would get everyone out.

Point 3: enough Wind Walk spells would get you all out. Combine it with Invisibility or Invisibility Sphere for even better sneaking.

Point 4: If you need time to reprepare spells, you could collapse one of the upper tunnels behind you temporarily trapping yourselves in.

Point 5: Guards and Wards would serve a similar purpose as far as delaying pursuit.

Point 6: The Ankheg idea would work but you would need to be fairly close to the surface unless you're playing 3.0 1 min/level isn't much if you're trying to dig a tunnel for 12 people. You might also want to cast it on the dwarf instead of the wizard. His Stonecunning will enable him to guess how far along he is....

We made it.

We eventually find a secret temple most likely to the God of Betrayal. We enter and the mage we rescue runs ahead, grabs a scroll, and init starts. Oh boy.

Big fight. Some lucky rolls and a couple of hard hits later, one dead mage, two fried rescuees, a disintergrated rescuee, and a stone rescuee. We find a river and use some spells to get the heck out.

We head towards the horse. The falcon tells us the mounts are surrounded by some of the army. 6 live fighters, 6 dead ones, and a happy bear (ranger's bear protected the horses). We sneak up, knock them out and tie them to each other, splash some ale on and take their pants.

All in all mission complete because the one person we were supposed to rescue to safe and sound and we take a week break. Wizard is happy considering we found the enemy wizard's spellbook.

If we didn't find a river, we would have most likely used the Ankheg idea. Thanks to all who posted.
