Help, please. My computer has some sort of bad program.

On a Related Note...

... My computer is also having a problem on startup. I am also running Windows XP, in this case SP1. I get into my account and my desktop fine, but after a few moments it crashes, and I get a Blue Screen of Death that advises me to check my programs because there's some kind of fatal error.

The address it gives me is 0x0000000D, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000.

That doesn't look like anything to me, but perhaps someone with better Windows-fu can give me a hint.

I am thinking that some program is trying to run on startup and crashing, but I left the computer alone and it kept crashing and restarting without any help from me -- I let it sit on the "Please choose your user name" screen and this error still occurred.

I'll try the options already mentioned, but I moved last February and my Windows XP disk got lost in the shuffle. Is there anything else I might try?

Thanks a whole bunch!

For the love of all that is holy, upgrade to Service Pack 2 as soon as you can. You've probably got 8 different kinds of viruses because SP1 is a gaping doorway to let all kinds of crap into your computer.

For your current problem, try booting into safe mode by tapping F8 as the computer starts up. Just hit it repeatedly until you see a menu with some boot options on it. Select Safe Mode. Once you're in, you can try probably try and find the program causing the problem. Check the startup folder in the All Programs list. There are other programs that can help you see what is starting up when your computer boots. If you can, get McAfee's STINGER (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/) or other stand-alone virus scanner on a disk and run it. (You generally can't install programs in safe mode.)

Unfortunately, in the end, you're probably not going to be able to find the problem on your own. You should probably find a tech and bring your computer to them.
