Help Please!

I second this. I made the mistake of not doing this in training my second oldest son. He still has his first character and gets very emotional when she is mortally threatened in the game. I would suggest though, that you make the first deaths near the end of the session so that you don't have anybody sit around for along time just watching. This gives them time to make new characters before next game. Also, make sure you stress that they didn't 'Lose' the game. Have their characters buried with honor as heroes by the rest of the party or the town/victims they helped save. Make it a worthy death that helped accomplish something heroic. Good luck, and have fun.
A friend that I used to DM now DMs for his kids and some neighbourhood kids. He let them charm a skeleton and the kids got so upset when the charmed skeleton got killed that he had to backtrack and say that the skeleton was really alright.

Bones? Bones, wake up. Oh, by the Gods, no. No Bones, don't leave me! Bones, wake up! You can't die! BONES!!!...........???!!!POR QUE!!!??? :(

Sorry, just got a mental image of a mighty warrior falling to his knees and cradling a pile of bones, weeping in agony over the death of his beloved skeletal companion...who just happens to be named quite generically, Bones. :p

If you changed that to "DIM BONES" you would have exactly described my little 4 year old neighbor and his "pet skeleton". Funny.

I have looked on the site and can't find anything, but the gameday info. My wife is convinced that it is for retailers only and that you have to run it on the 7th.

Can libraries participate in this program?
Rather than poking about on the website, Your wife might want to talk to whoever she's ordering her books from. I think that the various gamesday stuff is being handled via distribution channels.

Alternately, she might want to talk to local game stores--Our School Gaming club ran a World-Wide Gameday event by partnering up with a local retailer that wasn't able to host the event at his shop.

I think having the characters pre-rolled and character sheets available to choose from would be a good idea.

After the first game let the kids choose to roll up new characters if they want.

The reason for this is that the character generation process is only really fun once you understand how the game works, for a newbie it's better to just jump right in and play.

Wait, how many kids simultaneously are you planning to run for? Cause dayum, someone mentioned thirty people somewhere up there.

I'd suggest, as others have said, to have several game-ready characters for them to pick. I'd say two of each class, of mixed races, would be a good enough selection.

Other than that, you have to think what it is the kids want, and what it is you want to give them. A nice dungeon romp with some social encounters and a dragon at the end should cover most of the D&D core experience, though.

Thanks for all the good advice. Sounds like I am in over my head. :D

I encourage roleplaying and free-thinking in my group of twenty and thirty year olds, I will do my best to do so in these groups, but I suspect that the atmosphere and size of group will be different than I am used to.

My sixteen year-old plays in my regular game. It's hard for him to draw the line between Dad and DM at times, but I have an awesome group of gamers to bring him along and teach him, because Dad couldn't possibly know anything.

The library has it's own ordering system. She has tried to explain it to me before, but after the first couple of sentences I usually block her out. I'm just kidding, if she's reading this. No really the system is rather complicated and it has to do with putting materials on certain lists to order and such.

She is going to send the form in for Game Day tomorrow. We will see how things turn out and I will post it.

There are many branches associated with the local library, around ten I beleive, they are all planning on ordering the three basic books. It usually takes books longer to arrive in the library ordering system, but eventually I will have plenty copies of the rules.

I plan on having plenty of pre rolled characters to choose from, but I will be up against it considering that the first game will be on June 10th. My group is going to get together for a cram session soon after the release.

I will get together with my other DM and we will decide on an adventure. The library system is going to buy copies of Keep on the Shadowfell. My wife plans on buying a couple copies from the local store when it is released.

Thanks for all the help. All the help that you can give will be appreciated.
