Ny, GOOD FOR YOU!!! As a veteran, we appreciate the donations, especially since most of us can no longer give blood ourselves (Mad cow disease is still a 'threat' from anyone ever stationed in Europe). I wish more young people would give blood, but most just don't care. Nice to see you do.
Thanks again.

Yeah... I just donated this weekend...

Tried out the new double-red-blood-cell apheresis technique they have now. Basically, they pump out the blood, centrifuge out the blood cells from the plasma, and then pump the plasma back into you with a bit of saline. Then, they do it a second time. They get twice as much blood, but give you back your plasma. Kind of nifty.

Two pints low, though... I think I ended up going to bed before 7 o'clock that night, I was so sleepy. :D

Doing a little looking, it appears it is legit. The only real catch is that these sites and their parent company, CharityUSA are not themselves non-profits, so their goal is to make a profit and stay in business through sales on their site while directing sponsor money to the organizations they assist.
The red tape for 501c3's is enormous, and sometimes you have to forgo tax-exempt status to do exactly what you want without your hands getting tied. That said, helping other 501c3's manage their donations sounds like a smart and profitable business plan.
