the Young Reader Dragonlance books are really a lot of fun to read. Plenty of adventure with a group of kids and a pretty gripping story, all things considered.

Also, the Knights of the Silver Dragon Series (put out by wotc) is aimed at 7-9 year olds, (written by Matt Forbeck, of all things), and they're pretty good too.

Lemony Snickett is definately aimed for kids 10-13, and are probably too scary for 2nd grade. i know i found them deeply disturbed =)

I read this book as a sixth grader, but I'm sure a 2nd grader could manage:

The Castle of Llyr by Lloyd Alexander

This is one of the first fantasy books I have ever read; great stuff.

Unfortunately, that's the third book of the series.

It goes: The Book of Three, The Black Cauldron, The Castle of Llyr, Taran Wanderer, and The High King.

Some of his other fiction is pretty darn good, as well...
