Help the PC's destroy 2 artifacts!

So I have a few ideas that my NPC's could suggest to the PC's to destroy 2 evil artifacts they just got their hands on.

One is a Book of Vile Darkness. The other is a 1-ft tall green statue that is actually the remains of a long time dead god...before his death, his essence was preserved into this statue.

The PC's so far know of 2 evil groups that want the book. They killed the only person that was interested in the statue.

I run a planar game, so my possibilities are limitless. So what would be some interesting ways to destroy 2 evil artifacts?

- Find the evil god's current reincarnation and convince that person (true neutral clueless commoner) to destroy the statue.

- Resurrect and attain Atonement for the people from whose skin the BoVD's cover and pages were made.

Read your 1e DMG. It has a list of ways to destroy artifacts.
I don't own a 1e DMG...I was too busy playing my ColecoVision during those days.

I would really appreciate it if someone could type up that info from the 1e DMG or maybe post up a scan of the page (is that legal?).

A few of the better ones are in the back of the new 3.5e DMG-II. My copy of the 1e DMG is long gone, or I'd post some.

I remember there was one about destroying an item with the foot of Blahblahkrakus, the Triple Iron Golem, and another about destroying the item at the foot of a humble ant. (My campaigns now feature singularly arrogant ants, just in case my players think of trying that one.)

Let's see what I can come up with from memory . . .

1) Bury it in a mound of 1,000 ancient red dragon skulls.
2) Drop it into the fires of Mt. Doom (or something like that was a blatant rip off of LotR).
3) Crush it on the heel of a humble ant.
4) Soak/submerge it in the blood of something really powerful and evil . . . I can't remember the entity who's blood was needed.

That's all I can remember, but there were many more.

Throw it off the egde of Sigil. It will fall forever in a null magic zone. The Only problem is getting to edge of Sigil, with two cults in your way..

Oh that's where I saw it! I thought for sure I had read some suggestions about destroying artifacts and it was the 3.5 DMG II. Thanks!

Keep em coming if you got any suggestions. Thanks guys!

You'll probably find the suggtestions in the 1e DMG to be your typical mission impossible.

BovD: burn it? ;)

How about the two artifacts being linked somehow? Perhaps the destruction of one requires the other, or something like that. Or or or... i got it! :) Maybe the statue of the long-dead god (wouldn't be a fire god, would he?) could have something in it that would allow the PCs to destroy the BovD. So, say they start asking questions about how to destroy the book and the statue and so so on, they could learn that the BovD requires some sort of special holy ointment. So then, they start looking about for the ointment, perhaps sent on a quest to an ancient, long-abandonned city, where they learn that the ointment hasn't existed for millenia and cannot be replicated nowadays. Coincidence: in this long-abandonned city, the ancient god Blahblablah (who's statue they have) was reverred. So as they despair about destroying the BovD, they could then find out how to destroy the statue, find the holy ointment within, and 2 for 1 they get the BovD too!

As for the statue, well that's another matter. Long dead god artifacts, i think, require stuff from a long-dead nemesis to destroy. No idea for now.

I'm guessing Spheres of Annihilation don't do jack to Artifacts? I don't remember exactly.

Just use Mordenkainen's Disjunction. A lot. It has a 1% chance per caster level of destroying an artifact, but the person doing so probably loses the ability to cast arcane spells forever afterward.

Conclusion: Make scrolls of it and hire someone who doesn't need arcane spells to use them (take a single level of wizard on your fighter, use the scrolls, retrain; or something like that). ~20% chance of success with each scroll isn't that bad.
