Help to make my familiar (a little) more special...

Hi everybody!

Well, I noticed you all do a great job of helping other players out, so I thought I'd tap into this vast and powerful resource.

I have a mage (Ftr2/Wiz7) for whom I recently obtained a familiar, a hawk (nothing fancy). But I was thinking about improving it using my own XP in a similar way as the ancestral weapon rules from the old Dragon magazine, don't have the issue handy... I was hoping to get suggestions on how to spend the XP to give her interesting abilities useful to the whole party but not unbalancing or overshadowing.

Now, before I get any suggestions to make it a demi-god-like creature capable of felling 3 pit fiends... :\ I'm not looking to unbalance the game, or become the star of the party, or anything like that. I consider that since she is a hawk, I would focus her into her natural abilities, like scouting (spot), (possibly) Listen, other sensory qualities... Combat is probably not an interest for me to focus on for her, as it would take a lot to make sure she didn't die. (Although I did enjoy the story in one thread about the guy who shapechanged his 14 familiars into kraken or something...

Can anyone come up with, or direct me to, other sources of inspiration for abilities for familiars that might be fun or interesting?

I haven't gotten any of the Familiar books that have been mentioned on other threads yet, like Friends & Familiars, Dweomercraft: Familiars, Encyclopaedia Arcane: Familiars, or Book of Familiars. Has anyone looked at these and found that they might be helpful in this level of endeavor?

Again, I'm not looking to be "The Incredible Familiar Guy", just make it a little more interesting...

Thanks for your help everybody!
;)

[PS: I'd appreciate if suggestions for abilities, etc. were accompanied by appropriate XP costs, keeping in mind that our XP gains in this game are quite modest (the party has gained about 5 levels in about 2 years.)]
Tks!

Why not simply use magical items to enhance the familiar? A few items that increase Spot, Listen and Search are easy to craft, and a hawk would have at least a few slots to wear an item.
