sparhawk

First Post
I am making a Human rogue in the Forgotten Realms w/ a home region of Waterdeep. I am focusing on locks and traps and fighting with tumbling. I can use any core book or supplament from WOTC. Please help me flesh this character out.

3.0 or 3.5?

Improved Initiative is very useful to help you get sneak attacks on flat-footed opponents.

Two-weapon fighting is also great for rogues, since you can tumble into flanking position and then full attack on the next round, getting a sneak attack on each attack. TWF also opens up Two-Weapon Defense and Twin Sword Style (which is a Waterdeep regional feat, and whose benefits in 3.5 stack with TWD).

You might like Nimble Fingers, too: +2 on Disable Device and Open Locks.

Enjoy.

Lighting Reflexes, Improved Initiative, Acrobatic (From S&S or 3.5), or Nimble Fingers (3.5).

Any of those 2 would be great as your first level feats.

We are playing 3.0

What book is nimble fingers from?
I have already chosen Improved Initiative
What does Acrobatic give me?
I assume (shudder) that S&S is Song and Silence?

edit for spelling

Maybe it's "Song and Silence"? :p

Check out the Thug feat. I think it is in the FRCS. If you are playing a slick tongued fellow, it's really nice as it gives both a +2 to Persuade and +2 Initiative.

You can almost pass on Improved Initative with this.

Nimble Fingers is in the 3.5 PHB. Guess you'll pass, then, since you're playing 3.0. TWF will be a tough choice, then, since you'll have to take Ambidexterity and TWF.

If you want to boost initiative more, I'm also partial to Blooded (FRCS): +2 to Spot and +2 Initiative.

I am not playing a silver tongued rogue I want to specilize in locks and traps and be able to defend myself and "help" in combat. I am not very good at or very interested in playing a diplomat or information gatherer

As an interesting quirk, you could consider taking the Cosmopolitain or Educated feat and study Architechure and Engineering. That should help you anticipate where a trap might be located or how it could work. Knowing if something is a load bearing wall could also be very important at times.

I'm pretty sure that Waterdeep gets Cosmopolitain, not so sure about Educated.

Plan to multiclass with four levels of fighter somewhere in your career. It will really help with the combat potential of your character, and you can make up the skill points in your core competencies later.

What sort of weapon do you favor? Dagger, Shortsword and Rapier all have their advantages, you should know which you want to specialize in.

Dagger can be thrown. That can allow you to get a full attack off on someone who is running past, which with Sneak Attack can be a huge difference.

Shortswords are usually considered more common than rapiers. You can also use a short sword in each hand since they are light weapons for humans. That would allow you to buy Weapon Focus and get the bonus on both weapons.

Rapier has the best critical range of the available weapons. Unfortunately, you can't use two rapiers (one in each hand).

Have to look at the regional feats for Waterdeep, see what is available. There might be something else that would help you more.
