I can help with this
I need to know what level it is, but, I have some ideas.
Random ideas
1) The coin was added to the mass of a swarm of animated coins.
2) The theif that stole the coin fell victim to a gelatinous cube which has now become engorged with power.
3) The coin has been taken by a dragon who has subsequently become unconsious in its lair from the coin's power. The PC's can retreive the coin easily but if they wake up the NPC's wife, the dragon will awaken, angry, and wreak it's vengence on the thorp/hamlet/town/village. This forces a moral desicion. If they choose to keep the dragon unconsious, they will need to convince the NPC it's for the best.
Note: They can't destroy the dragon while it's unconsious because it's technically dead. When th curse is broken, it will revert to what it was, an angry, large dragon.
