Help with a class im working on

I want to retool the Aristocrat to make it more of a pc class. I want to give it some spellcasting abilities, similar to something a shadow weave spellcaster would know, or a shadowknight from Champions of Norrath. I was wondering what i should do to make that playable without being overpowered?

I'm not much help with the flavor, but a simple solution is to use either the bard or paladin spell progressions. Charisma seems like a good stat to tie his casting to.

I saw a guy post once (I don't know where) that he just added some bonus feats and gave him the fighter list to give the aristocrat some teeth, but that doesn't sound quite like what you're searching for. You could slow it down to once every 3, 4, or 5 levels, and tailor the list to suit you.

I was thinking of giving them at least the Bard spell progression, but was thinking about a wizard progression, as the shadow weave isnt designed to be overtly powerful. Necromancy, Illusion, Enchantment and any spell with the darkness descriptor. I was thinking about dropping heavy armor proficiency, but still keeping the arcane spell failure. Maybe limit them to only a few martial weapons, such as just sword like martial weapons. I was also thinking about lowering their HD to a D6 so its not uber powerful. That sound fair? Maybe bump up their skill points to 6 instead of 4.

It sounds like what you want is an aristocratic wizard. A blend of the two classes is probably what you're after; just reduce the spell list to the few you're interested in and stick with a fair skills list (not as robust as the aristocrat, not as limited as the wizard). I don't think 6 skill points is a good idea if this class is designed to have a high Int; if it's designed to have a high Cha, then it's okay. If you're going to go with d6 instead of d4, you'll have to have an explanation for this. I mean, an aristocratic type who spends all his time reading books isn't all that likely to have amassed much in the way of hit points.

im basing it on a merge of the two classes, but with a limited spell selection. Its going to be using Cha as its main stat, I figured I would go with a 4 skill points, like the Aristocrat. I decided that the d6 for HD would make sense since i dropped the heavy armor proficiency and limited the martial prof. As well at not being able to have a familiar or the bonus feats from wizard. Does that sound fair? BAB and Saves as an Aristocrat but the rest like this.

You're talking about essentially a wizard with better HD, BAB, skills, and proficiencies, in exchange for no familiar, no bonus feats, and access to only three schools of magic or thereabouts. Of those, only the BAB advantage seems too much under the circumstances. I suppose, you could go with that but reduce the spells per day by 1 per spell level (imposed right when they would gain access to each spell level), and probably take away the medium armor proficiency too.

Thus, at 1st-level they'd get, for instance, a base of 0 spells per day of 1st-level, only receiving any bonus 1st-level spells for good Charisma (if any). Then at 3rd-level, they'd gain access to a base of 0 2nd-level spells per day, plus any bonus 2nd-level spells per day for good Charisma (if any). Etc. Same way that a bard has access to "0" spells per day of any given level when they would first gain access to it. They'd still be able to learn spells of a given level when they first gain access to it, but they wouldn't be able to cast them yet unless they had a high enough Charisma; otherwise they'd have to wait until the next level, when they'd gain a base of 1 spell per day of that level.
