Help with an NPC orcish ranger

Torment

First Post
So, in my campaign, I have an NPC who's actually good, but bent on revenge on the PCs. Here's the reason (I thought it was somewhat funny how that all happened), basicly they came upon a tribe of orc (ooc: they were good), but unfortunatly diplomacy failed, PCs refused to do a quest that would earn the orc's trust. So basicly it came down to blows, with the PCs actually winning and slaughtering what might be the very last tribe of good-aligned orc on the planet.

Funny? Yeah I thought so. :) So funnier still, we have the son of the orc chieftan that actually was not slaughtered by the PCs *he was guarding something somewhere else, the PCs only went there the next morning, after they spent all day killing off every remaining man, woman and orc child in their little keep. So the orc was hiding somewhere else.

Anywho, here's my question. Anyone have any idea how to make this revenge-bent, but still good orc lad?

I was thinking ranger, for the whole "I am going to track you guys and kill you like you did to my father and whatnot", I am opened to other suggestions. I was thinking of making him level 6 or 7 ish. Just out of the players power reach for now. He's only going to come along later in the campaign though.

:) Thanks for your input.

In the Silver Marches (Forgotten Realms) book is a class that is perfect for Rangers of Orcish decent. I think it is called Orc Scout. It is interesting as it adds a mishmash of abilities including stealth, sneak attack, Fast Movement (becoming very quick). It is not necessarily like an assassin, but the abilities will certainly mesh with your stated intention of having the dude track down the PC's for a confrontation someday.

If I was hunting PCs...

Ranger 6, Horizon Walker 1

Favored Enemies to match PCs
Archery Combat Style
Improved Favored Enemy feat
Iron Will

Horizon Walker gets you 120' darkvision. Hunt them at night and at a distance. Boost your defenses to avoid getting hit with spells.

How about Orc Barbarian 1/Ranger 3/ Orc Paragon 3

Str-22 Dex-13 Con-14 Int-8 Wis-10 Cha-6

Favored Opponent-Humanoid(Human) or

With a good strength composite longbow, some potions and hard cover the can snipe at the party from range and use his 40' speed to withdraw before the party can close in melee. Several days or nights of hit and run attacks and the Orc can likely wear down most of the party's disposable resources.

Feats,

Skill focus - Hide
Skill focus - Move Silently
Stealthy.

He should hunt them down, sneak past the night watch and and CDG the others in thier sleep. A merciful death compared to the horrid slaughter they wrought. Once done with that, he fights whoever was on the night watch. He should be out for vengence, not out to provide the party with a fun fight.

I like the idea of stalking them in the night. Thanks for all your input guys, first thread post and some pretty creative minds in here :)

Since he'll be alone, consider using his animal companion to support him in a night attack. A stealthy animal can serve as a distraction or a flanker. He could also whistle in his companion if he got in a tough spot. A wolf coming in from outside of visual range amid a bunch of half-asleep characters?

One thing to consider? He's a hunter. Watch how they make camp. Who is on watch at what times? Is the human fighter ever on watch by himself? When are the humans on watch? When do the spellcasters go to sleep? Is it possible to exhaust them by denying them a good nights sleep? Do they ever camp in less advantageous places? Can he get above them and snipe at them? Avoid the rogues and the like on watch; catch the fighters and wizards.

Although a barbarian and paragon build is very tempting, I would avoid it. He's a hunter and lone killer. Barbarians that enter rages all alone don't tend to last very long. He'll be used to cutting his losses, killing a few of his foes and getting out while he can. But that's me.

The Barbarian level is mainly in there for the improved speed rather than the rage (although the speed could be boosted via feat or magic) but rage would also be useful when the Orc has worn down the party and he wants to finish them off by his own hands.

The paragon levels are primarily useful for removing the awful light sensitivity penalties and getting a slight bonus to strength but a pure night fighter doesn't need them as much.

i might consider using levels in Bloodhound from Complete Adventurer; if not the concept, at least some of the class abilities. i once rolled a character that was a mesh between the Bloodhound and the Justicar from Complete Fighter. he was a badass, but he was in it for the money, so he always dealt subdual damage. just a thought. i do like the Orc Scout, though; seems almost tailor-made for your concept.

I could see possibly taking the Bounty Hunter PRC. Somehow bind the leader of the group and have him watch the slaughtering of his group. Saving him last.
