Like jumping through hoops much? That stuff isn't exactly off the shelf in the blacksmith shop in Hommlet. Heck, it probably doesn't exist in most campaign worlds. (I, for one, have never seen it in play.)

Then again, you're talking to the guy who came up with the "Mage-Brutes."

Just a quick FYI, Moonbow has been errata'd to a fixed 3 orbs, not a d4.

Of course they erratta'd it. Only the Conjuration school is allowed to have good direct damage spells, why did I forget that?

Seriously...the variable bolts was the whole reason the spell even stood out to begin with. LAME.

EDIT: *does some math* It didn't even really "nerf" it -- d4 averages 2.5, so it strengthened it slightly on its own. Combined with Empower (pre-errata), you pay +2 spell levels for a grand total of 3.75 bolts, on average. All WotC did there was make the spell less fun and take away a good use of a metamagic feat. :( Next you'll tell me they fixed it so you can't double the stun duration of Stun Ray for only +1 level via Extend Spell, right? *pouts*

Obtaining a copy of the Complete Arcane so as to use one of its base classes is not jumping through hoops... but downloading a PDF from Crystalkeep and using the information therein is?

Neither are +2 swords, +3 armor, or Boots of Flying.

Your point?

Actually, yes.

Nobody in any of my current groups uses gaming pdfs. No table I've sat at in the past 10 years uses gaming pdfs.

I was using rhetorical exaggeration.

Just like gaming pdfs, no campaign I've been a part of has ever used any of those qualities except Mithril.

The others are considerably more exotic than +2 weapons, Boots of Flying or anything else from the DMG.

And even though they show up in the Completes, IME, more people are far more inclined to use the Base classes, PrCls, Feats & spells than the exotic materials.

While I've not seen most of those classes, etc. in play, I have had the option of using them- not so the special materials. The same goes for campaign settings- despite extensive play in FR, none of the exotic materials from Magic of Faerun has seen action.

(Obviously, YMMV.)
