Help with beholder non-combat encounter!

I think that we need to know why you want this encounter and what you expect the outcome to be.....

Afterall interaction could be as simple as hmmm, I smell gold on you, I think that would be a nice bit of dessert to something as complicated as RangerWickets mirror idea.

Ah, I like Rangerwickitts idea for sure!

I'll probably use some sort of variation on that, I think possibly combining some of the other ideas given here.

Hurm....why not take the easy route? The beholder is lazy and likes to eat rocks, ya? Well, maybe there's a BIG pile of rocks WAAAAAYYY up on the mountain that he has just been slavering over for some time. He's too lazy to go up and get them though. He tasks the party with bringing them down, and of course, they must not be placed in any shadow, or it will spoil their "solar ripeness". To add fuel to the fire, have some storm coulds rolling in on the horizon.

I was going to suggest something similar. Have some special mineral or crystals that can only be found in a cave nearby. The SB doesn't like blasting them out himself (lazy) but they're extra tasty. Have him send the PCs in to dig out a big pile of them for him to crunch on.
