Help with Character Creation

First Post
Very new to 3E character creation, and very slow learner at it. Below is a PC I am about to start playing the base Attribues I know are correct but the rest I don't know about. Please help me by telling me what I did wrong and how to fix it.

Gavin, Tiefling Rogue 1
Str14, Dex18, Con14, Int16, Wis14, Cha10
Fort +2 , Ref +6, Will +2
Atk melee (Dagger, punching 1d4x3), ranged (Shortbow, composite 1d6x3)
AC 17 (10+4 dex+3 armor), hp 8 (1d6+2)
SA: cold, fire, electricity resistance 5, darkness 1/day, darkvision, sneak attack +1d6
Load: (58/59-116/117-175 lb)
Home Region: Sembia
Patron Diety: Ilmater and/or Silvanus
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Skills and Feats: Balance +4, Bluff +4, Climb +4, Disable Device +4, Hide +4, Jump +4, Listen +4, Move Silently +4, Open Lock +4, Search +4, Spot +4, Tumble +4; Precise Shot
Languages: Common, Dwarven, Elven, Undercommon
Equipment: Studded Leather Armor, 2x Dagger, punching, Shortbow, composite, Quiver (Arrows (20)), Backpack (Clothes, Bedroll, Blanket, Hemp Rope (50 ft), 4x Torch, Waterskin), Belt Pouch (4x Candles, Flint and Steel, Fishhook, Sewing needle), Belt Pouch (Whetstone, Thieves' tools), 774gp

Change the daggers to regular; they can be thrown in a pinch.
Add 50' rope (silk when affordable), some pitons and a hammer.
Also, get a club or staff (they're free!) for when you need bludgeoning weapons (like against skeletons). Finally, more arrows...you can never have too many arrows...

As you progress in levels, keep your eye out for either a belt of many pouches, or Heward's Handy Haversack, to reduce weight.
If you plan on turning him into a sniper, stick to Bow feats. Otherwise, Expertise and Weapon Finesse would be good to have. Also, Dodge is NOT a useless feat...I can't count the number of times PC's in my campaign avoided damage by 1 point of AC.

I don't have a FRCS to do a check on all of this, here are some things I noticed:

Precise Shot has Point Blank Shot as a prerequisite.

I think that the default languages for the Sembian area are Chondathan and Common. Forgotten Realms made some alterations to the language selections, you need to check their rules.

You should have the language listed for Sembia, Common, plus 3 bonus languages from the list for Sembia. The bonus languages are from your Int bonus.

It looks like you've listed the number of skill ranks you put into each skill. This makes it nice for checking the character, but remember that you get the attribute modifier and (possibly) some racial modifiers on top of that.

Equipment is also selected by area. You need someone with the FRCS to check if that was done right.

Since your from Sembia, I would have seriously considered taking the Educated feat at first level. It makes all knowledge skills (such as Knowledge: Architechure) class skills.

I'm not familiar with Tieflings. Do they get extra skill points? If not, you have too many points. (48 instead of 44, from (8+3)x4)

I don't know your campaign, but nice stats (ahem). And the money? No normal starting character would have hundreds of gold. But if you actually have that much, invest at very least in some masterwork armour and weapons.

Is this correct?

Punching dagger is correct, 1d4+2 from your STR, x3 on crit.
Shortbow is just 1d6, x3 on crit. You don't get your STR bonus to damage unless using a mighty composite bow.

You didn't list your attack bonuses, but they would be +2 for melee attacks like the dagger and +4 for ranged attacks like the bow.

the extra starting equipment for a PC from Sembia is 300 gp

(and you're right about the languages :) )

a couple more comments about equipment (and reiteration of other posts...)

if your money is calculated correctly, i would strongly suggest:

1) upgrade your composite shortbow to a mighty composite shortbow +2, to do 2 extra points of damage on every hit (150 gp)

2) upgrade your studded leather armor to masterwork studded leather, it will reduce your armor check penalty from -1 to 0, and won't affect your skills (balance, climb, etc.) (150 gp)

3) upgrade your thieves tools to masterwork thieves tools, for +2 to Disable Device and Open Lock checks (70 gp)

4) upgrade your hemp rope to silk, weighs half as much (9 gp)

5) buy another quiver of arrows (1 gp), get a club (0 gp) and get rid of your torches (-4 cp) and candles (-4 cp) (you have darkvision, you don't need them :D )

...which will leave you with 399 gold and 8 copper :)
