Help with Character Ideas for Sorceror/Cleric!

Fayredeth

First Post
One of the players in my group just signed up here, but she's experiencing some technical difficulties with starting a thread, so I volunteered to help.

She has a gnome Sor2/Clr2 character that could use some interesting strategies and ideas. Her scores are pretty high, with top in Wisdom. We're running around the Forgotten Realms, near Silverymoon at the moment.

Her sorceror spells are: 0-Ray of Frost, Flare, Dancing Lights, Disrupt Undead, Mage Hand, Open/Close, Prestidigitation 1- Magic Missile, Magic Weapon

She has plenty of ranks in Search, Spot, Liste, Spellcraft, and Alchemy

Her feats are Empower Spell and Spellcasting Prodigy (FRCS)

Some direction to take her character would be good, tricks that she could do, combat strategies, ways to expand the character... pretty much any ideas that come to you. It would be very much appreciated. Evenmagical item suggestions could be forwarded to the DM.

Heh, this is something I've thought about in the past, but have never gotten to do in a game :)

Some questions you might ask what her character might respond to are:
How do you see sorcerous magic? Gift of the gods, runs in the bloodline of dragons?
How did your friends view your "easy" aquisition of magic, rather than long hours of studying illusion.
Did you use your natural magic for pranks when you were younger?
How do you see Mystra? Mother, older sister, best friend, partner in crime, etc
What might cause you to leave your village and become an adventurer?

Using these, ask questions like, if Mystra is your mother, and magic is a gift from the gods, is it REALLY good for you to be using it to make Uncle Finegar's ears grow?

Unless it's set in stone allready, I'd advise against using magic weapon under the sorcerer list. Allways try to use cleric spells for things like that if you can, especially non-scaling ones. A good tip would be to try and choose things that have effects that raise with level (instead of just being a +1). If you REALLY need to get a +1 weapon (IIRC, the spell doesn't stack with an allready magic weapon), just cast it as a cleric :) There are so many good level one spells, pick one that the character could use and run with it

Oh, yeah, one reccomendation I would make is for her to take a prestige class that is divine/arcane magic friendly, maybe looking at the Hathran and True Necromancer for ideas. Splitting spell casting classes can allways hurt in power.

As for items, umm, if she's going to no-armor route, (which I kinda hope ), anything that would add to ac is good. Amulet of natural armor, ring of protection, etc. This is especially important if you're not going to take mage armor as an arcane spell. On that note, investing in a mithral buckler is allways a good idea for a mage (no spellcraft penalty!)

As for character tricks... umm, you can use your familiar to deliver touch spells such as healing without you having to get into the fray (also usefull if the party is split up in a fight.

Well, I've got to head out and work on a homework project, but if you've got any more questions I'll be checking here latter.

Another good PrC to look at is the Geomancer in Masters of the Wild. "Geomancy is the art of channeling magical energy from many sources through the land itself." This means the Geomancer has the really cool ability to mix and match spellcasting abilities. For example, sorcerer spells can be cast in armor, like divine spells, with no chance of arcane spell failure. Sorcerer spells can be spontaneously converted to cure spells. She can use either her Wis or Cha bonus to set DC for spells, whichever is higher. This class is just cool on so many levels.

Sorry - what does Spellcasting Prodigy do? (haven't got the 3e FRCS).

Anyway, spells-wise I'd definitely go heavy with the blasty offensive spells for her sorceror levels, since she can count on her cleric levels for the more utility stuff.

What domains does she have?

I think her domains are Good and Rune. Spellcasting Prodigy effectively increases the key ability score for one of her classes by two, for spellcasting purposes such as DC and bonus spells.
