Help with Freelance Editor Payrate

I have recently decided to seek the help of an editor, or rather pre-editor, to assist in my freelance D20 endeavors but I really don't know what percentage of the final pay to offer. Is there a standard for freelance editing or can anyone make suggestions to guide me.

Thank you in advance for any input.

I don't think there is any set percentage to pay freelance editors, especially if the final product is pdf.

The only thing you can do is ask around other pdf publishers and ask how much they are spending on editing.

I think somewhere between 5% and 15% depending on your other costs - art, advertising, percentage to go to RPGnow, etc.

My name is Peter Schaefer, and I am a freelance editor. I have reasonable rates, and I would be happy to discuss them with you. Please email me at peter@inkmonkeys.net or leave your email here and I'll get back to you.

Yrs,
Peter

Thank you maransreth for the post. Thank you inkmokeys for the offer but I already have a fantastic editor that is willing to work with me. I was just hoping to get enough information to make an uninsulting yet not overly generous offer. I needed a quick response since the project was on hold until we hammered out the specifics, which we have taken care of now.

Thank you again for your help.

I find it's easier to ask what someone would like to be paid for a job like this and if you think it's too steep either negotiate a lower price or thank them for their time and move on.

After all, there are some people you just cannot afford (or justify paying for) at all levels of publishing.

Hmm, one thing I missed in this the first time through. You were asking for rates for someone to polish your work before you sent it to a publisher, and not for a publisher paying for a normal editor. I can imagine that they'd want to be paid a set fee, as opposed to a percentage, since you can't guarentee that your work would be used fully.
