help with, paladin code, virtue and the defination of good

POPE

First Post
Hey,

I was wondering if anyone could help be come up with a working code for paladins. What I have in mind is a holy warrior who cause is to sek outand destroy evil, specificaly evil outsiers. Martial prowess is very impoetant as is work ethic and personal honor.

What code would he live by? What virtues would be the most important? how should he define good and evil? what does honor mean to him?

Any help is welcome.

Just so you know, you'll find no consensus on the topic here. :)You'll get things from paladins needing to be goody-two-shoes to paladins being able to defy all civilized behavior in pursuit of what they think is evil.

I will perhaps try a different track, and answer a question with a question - this is for your game. So, what kind of definitions of good and evil do you want him to use?

That's the key - define for yourself what kind of end-products you want to see. Do you want to see Paladins acting like Batman, defying the local authorities in pursuit of evil? Or do you want to see courtly knight-paladins upholding the law of the land? You can tailor them into whatever you like, so you need to know what you want before you define the code.

I just suggested the following virtues for developing a paladin code to one of the players in my group.

Compassionate: Suffering is the true enemy. Strive to rid the world of suffering in all its forms.

Energetic: Be vigorous, robust, and industrious, in mind as well as body.

Forgiving: Turn the other cheek and seek not vengeance.

Honorable: Be true to your word.

Temperate: Take all things in moderation.

Valorous: Be strong in the face of danger.

The one am thinking of is more like batman. They are seeking the most powerful evvil entities and have an almost by any means necessary attitude. They are opposed/frowned upon by the more boyscout (superman attitude) order.
I am not sure how to work it out.

Check out the 5 spells from Relics & Rituals together form the "body of Corean" ( Hand of Justice being the last spell that will point you to the others). Even though these are spells, they give a very good base for what a Paladin should be in MHO.

If you want a paladin who focuses on fighting outsiders, The Order of Silver PRC from Secrets and Societies should help you customize the Paladin

I think that with a Paladin, the most important thing is to figure out what is most important to the Paladin. I know that sounds axiomatic, but its more true for a Paladin than any other class.

What's more important, killing the Fiends, or Protecting Humanity from the Fiends? If its the first you might have to let a few innocents die for the "greater good" of killing a really nasty fiend. If its the second, you might have to let a Fiend get away so that no innocents are harmed.

Every well thought out PC had priorities, but a Paladin has sworn to his God that he will never swerve from his duty, no matter the price. For that simple reason, you have to know what the 1st duty is. And the 2nd duty. And the 3rd. And so on. Whatever his code is, just make sure it is both LAWFUL and GOOD, and that your DM agrees that it meets that criteria. After that, just stick to the code, and the rest is up to you.
