I'm not familiar with Greater Status (what level, duration, range, effect?) but for the spell Status, I think I'd start by looking at the generic item creation formula for a continuous effect (spellLevel_2 x casterLevel_3 x 2000gp) = 12000gp. I think that would get you two rings: one master, and one other (that can be "read" by the wearer of the master ring). Increase the casterLevel to 6 (=24000gp) and that gets you three rings (one master and two others), and so on. You might need to increase the total cost a bit (say x1.5) if you want all the rings to be able to "read" each other (ie, they're all masters).

Since there's no range limit on the spell (except "on the same plane of existence"), I don't think the rings would have a limit, either.

For the spell Greater Status, I presume you'd just plug in the appropriate spellLevel and casterLevel (plus 50x the cost of any expensive material components), and do the same calculation as above.

That's a start, anyway. If you've got a bit more info, maybe we can get a more precise number. Or maybe someon knows of an item that already does something similar..?

Greater Status is a 4th level clerical spell meaning a 7th level cleric minimum to cast/imbue it, which would connect two rings for 7 hours per activation so I'd recommend 4x daily presuming a default 24-hour day. Range isnt a factor since the spell

cost of (2) mundane rings -0-
spell's material costs -0-x50 = -0-
spell's XP cost -0-x50x5 = -0-
spell base cost; use-activate = 4th level spell x 7th cleric x 2,000 = 56,000 base price
reduce price to reflect 4 activations per day = /(5/4) = divide base by 1.25
so the final market price would be $44,800

Your construction cost is half the final market price and takes 1 day per $1,000 value, thus your pair of rings should ball-park around $22,400 and require 45-days to fabricate.

Fourth Level divine spell for BoED
  • As status, but you can also cast a limited selection of spells through the link, as if you were touching the target. You can cast any spell that meets the following conditions:
  • Level: 0, 1st, or 2nd
  • Range: Touch
  • Target: Creature touched
  • Saving Throw: harmless
For example, if you become aware (through the greater status spell) that one of your linked companions is dying, you can cast cure moderate wounds to try to revive her.
Thanks for all the help so far guys :)

One thing to remember is that spells do not always translate that well into magical items, it can be more art than science. Caster level x spell level may not be the best calculation method.
Case in point: ring of truestrike is a 1st level caster x 1st level spell, but could easily be priced by the +20 to hit squared.

I'd look and see where synergies with other abilities would give a boost not normally provided by a spell (such as Power attack with the ring above).

As a DM I would look hard at someone pricing something as a #/day use item that effectively is a continuous use item (as rules legal as it is).

true, however but definitely a consideration since the duration is a factor of the caster's level and thus could be accomplished accordingly without the item by dedicating sufficient spell-slots to repeatedly casting the spell; presumably for a suitable daily fee.

Secondly, I suspect the price reduction for #/day presumably reflects the risk of having the effect ended early by anti-magic, dispel magic, etc instead of simply being suppressed for a few rounds as would be the case for a continuous-use item.
