Help with selecting a character:

RBolyar2

First Post
So I'm joining a pathfinder group playing something called the Carrion Crown. I'm a noob and they currently have a group of 4. Here's the current party (I think):

1. Halfling Alchamist
2. Half-vampire sorcerer/oracle
3. Human monk
4. Half-vampire bard

So I believe I've decided on either a Paladin, Inquisitor or a Cavalier. I was hoping you fine folks at enworld can help me with the pros and cons of both classes. Below is my current character concept and kind of what I'm looking for or leary of:

  • My character will be human
  • My character will likely be lawful good
  • Would like for my character to dual wield
  • Would like to equip heavy armor
  • Would like to assist the party with healing, but unsure of how it affects half-vampires
Other questions:

  • What order should I delegate my starting stats (from highest to lowest) for a Cavalier?
  • An Inquisitor?
  • A Paladin?
  • I also sat in on a game with them sometime ago, that's setting involved there being many different "human" races. Any idea what setting that would be, and if those races would be applicable?

I do appreciate all the fine help you've provided!:D

By Dual Wield do you mean 2 handed fighting or two weapon fighting?
Carrion Crown sounds an awful lot like it would have dead guys galore. You want a Lawful Good melee character than can heal, wear heavy armor can beat up on evil undead. It sounds like you want a Paladin.

Strength and then Charisma for the Paladin. Constitution is good. You will likely have a low Wisdom and Dexterity score and a 10-12 Intelligence as these aren't your main stats as a Cavalier or Paladin as well. Inquisitor you want a strong Strength, Wisdom and Constitution I would imagine. For feats, go for stuff that benefits strength attacking like Power Attack, Cleave, etc.

My issues with being a Paladin are being in party with 2 half-vampires (one of which I know is evil)... and how healing would work.

Looks like Intelligence and Dex would be a dump stat for all 3 of those classes then?

Any thoughts on what Traits I might be looking for?

Also, any ideas on the different human races I referred to earlier?

I don't think any of Inquisator, Paladin or Cavalier are all that well suited to dual wielding, it's very feat intensive. Saying that it might work o.k. when smiting for a Paladin as you've got a bonus for each hit.
It looks like half-vampire is probably Dhampir Dhampir - Pathfinder_OGC
so yeah, they are treated as undead for healing (unless it's been house ruled or it's something else, check with the GM)
If you go Paladin you're probably going to be best off healing yourself as a swift action anyway rather than doing too much for the rest of the party (and the halfling and human will probably give you enough to use the rest of your healing on anyway)
I'd be cautious about playing a LG character in a group where there is an evil character irrespective of the class of the LG character, at the very least you'd want to talk it over with the GM to see how he interprets a paladin's code for interaction.
I'm not sure how badly the Cavalier will be affected by the adventure type, it looks like it's at least somewhat hurt in areas where being mounted isn't practical and an undead heavy campaign may not have all that many situations where the mount is overly usable.

Saying that years back in 2nd ed AD&D days I played a NE fighter in a group with a Paladin and the group went o.k. (Of course it helped that my character was smart enough to realize that she was much better off with the Paladin fighting on her side rather than against her)

I don't think I'd rate dex as a dump stat for an Inquisitor but it's not a top priority (unless you're going archer build)
the different human races are _probably_ Ethnicities from the Pathfinder Inner Sea World Guide.

From the classes you've listed it looks like the party isn't all that optimized so you'd probably be o.k. to play anything.
The Paladin would probably add the most to the party as a badly needed tank, the Cavalier can do that role as well and the Inquisitor would be o.k. as well.

Two-weapon fighting isn't just feat intensive, the feats also require a high Dex. 15 to start, 17 for Improved, and 19 for Greater.

Well, if you're optimizing, I'm just going to echo the above and say Paladin or Cavalier (for the best BAB) with the requisite high Dex and Human. Make sure both your weapons are considered light to minimize your penalties, and for stats, make STR your top priority.

Note that you only get half your strength bonus for your off-hand weapon if it is light.

From a different standpoint, if you're going to ignore a shield, you'd be far more efficient with Power Attack and a two-handed weapon. For that build, I would choose Inquisitor, more for flavor than anything else.

The different humans... you may want to consider downloading the Carrion Crown player's guide. There might be something in there with regards to different regional humans getting different racial bonuses.

FYI, I was playing through Carrion Crown on the boards here. I opted for a Duergar Inquisitor. Consider it. :)
