Help with tattoo in Elvish

AuroraGyps

First Post
I've had an idea for a tattoo for a while now and need a bit of help with the details. As most of you know, I have some personal problems, and sometimes I get so down that I want to give up. So, I'd like to get the words "Strength*Faith*Courage" tattooed on the inside of my left wrist. It's visible, but still kinda private (I usually wear a watch w/ the face on the inside of my wrist) and where ever I am, I can just turn my wrist, see it, and get the boost I need. I was originally going to get it in regular English, but I think I'd like to get it in Elvish more. I have to make a decision of whether to write the English words in Elvish letters or find the words in the Elvish language and write that in Elvish letters. I got "The Languages of Tolkien's Middle-earth" from the library to help, and I was kind of hoping I'd luck out and find the words in there, but no. It does have the translation for "strong" and for "fate". I have Elvish fonts, several different ones, but that's about it. Anyways, I figure if there was anyplace I could find people w/ some ideas of where to look and stuff, it'd be here. And once I have what's going to be written, I can figuer out the size and design. Thanks guys... it's nice to ask for help with a somewhat happier subject. ;)

I've been told that there's one big question you should ask yourself before getting any tatoo:

Forty years from now, when you are old and saggy and have to go to the doctor for something, are you still going to be proud of that image on you body? Are you going to be embarassed when people ask you what it is and what it means?

If you can answer those questions properly, then the tatoo is a reasonable idea.

I use Elendor MUSH (http://www.elendor.net/translator.php) for all of my elvish translating needs.

In Sindarin:
Strength- bellas, turm, tuuu
Faith(ful)- sadron
Faithful Vassal- beren, booor, byyyr

In Quenya:
Strength- poldore, tuo
Faithful- voronda
Valour- kaane

In Teleri:
Strength- belle

Hm, I used to have an english-elvish thread or two going on that had a whole lot of stuff in it, along with a guide to translating into elvish script that someone added on. Don't know how much that will help you, but if you've got the search button or get someone to do it for you, then you should be all set.

I that it was called "Angcuru's English-Elvish-English Translation Thread: Requests Welcome" or something like that.

Well, if forty years from now, the inside of my wrist is really saggy, I don't think having a tattoo on top of that will make it that much worse looking. ;) If this tattoo does what I hope it does, and acts like a permanant reminder to me to "have strength, have faith, & have courage" when things are looking bad, then I'll be proud of it... especially if I DO make it to 40 years from now. :)
As for being embarassed when people ask what it means, I don't think I will be. I'm a gamer girl/ girl geek and I'm used to people thinking I'm a bit weird... which, I admit, I am. :D

Just a head's up: You are looking to put a tat in a very delicate part of your body. Lotsa of nerves and blood vessels bundled up there. If you are absolutely set on getting a tat there, research the artist thoroughly.

That said, and as a tattoo lover myself, I think it's a bad, bad idea to get a tat on the lower arm. No matter what your station in life is, your role or your societal mores, it is a decision you may regret someday.

I have runes and tats that are very meaningful to me, even though they are out of sight.

I'll echo that. If that's the place it is meant to be, consider moving it up your forearm a bit where there is a bit more meat.

I'm looking forward to the point in my career where it doesn't matter what I have visibly tattooed, but I accept that that point may come with retirement. I wear long sleeves and a labcoat most days, but there are still folks who consider tattoos unprofessional even if they can't see them. Never mind piercings.

Anyhow, good luck with the tattoo, AuroraGyps. Will it be your first?

Tattoo question: how about a "white" tattoo? Is that at all possible? I remember Jack Osbourne (yes, Ozzy's son) having one on his back, which wasn't really visible until you looked at it carefully. I think that would be a good idea if you want something private.

As to getting tattooed on the wrist, that must be so frickin' painful...

I have a tatoo that has white ink but it was more of a shading thing, so that the green and dark green would show up more.

Good luck Aurora
