Here come the Cybermen!

Ohh and the rotten BBC didn't put a tralier for next weeks episode at the end of this weeks one, so no clues as to how the cliffhanger is resolved! Grrr

About time they stopped doing that for the two parters!

And I'm jolly glad for digital BBC3, because Dr Who is on when I'm putting my littlies to bed, see, and so I set the video to record. After one week when they overran by a minute and I lost the end of the wolfman one, I set this to go on for 15 minutes over time, just to be on the safe side.

Because of a stupid football overrun, that meant that my video had recorded only the first half hour of Dr Who. Grrrrrr.

Still, I got to see it on Sunday night, and for me:

Best thing about the episode - Mickey/Rickey. I thought the actor played the two roles very credibly, and I like the gradual changes that are being made in the part. I thought his discussion with his Grandma was great too, not to mention his realisation about the carpet.

Worst thing about the episode - how on earth did they get surrounded by foes who can't even manage a brisk walk? It should have been pretty simple for them to do an end run around one of the lines of cybermen.

I like the visual design of the cybermen, but I can't help thinking they would have been more formidable foes if they were quick moving too. Strong and lumbering is like the old-world daleks.

Plus I had a couple of plot related questions - like

a) if the cybermen told the partygoers that they were to be taken for processing, why did they start killing all of them after the presidents resistance? Didn't seem in keeping with their orders as originally expressed (unless that is the problem with using down and outs for your cybermen?)

b) we've already seen that Lumic can 'override' the people with earpieces, let alone cause them to stop for a download. It would have made much more sense for him to have 'frozen' all the party goers and then the cybermen just carry them off to the processing centre. Why wouldn't he do that?

Cheers

I liked that a lot, too. It was great to see Noel Clarke given a chance to shine.

But the house was completely surrounded! There were supposed to be hundreds of Cybermen, even if we (the audience) know that there were only ten guys in Cyberman costumes. :p

The old Cybermen were always sort of lumbering too, even without such heavy costumes. I don't recall ever seeing a Cyberman run, or even walk rapidly.

It did look like they were killing everyone, but my assumption was that the rest of the partygoers were just being stunned. Or perhaps the Cybermen are already disregarding orders as they realize that they don't need to obey a weak fleshy being like Lumic. :]

I miss the guns the Cybermen used to have on their heads. Maybe those will show up in the next episode.

Because he's not a nice man! Maybe it would take too much power to override that many people at once? Maybe the Doctor will ask him that in the next episode?

We're all thinking too much. :D

It occurred to me to wonder why Lumic wanted to convert everyone in the world into Cybermen, if all he really wanted was to make himself immortal. Then I realized: if he only turned himself into a Cyberman, he'd be a freak and no one would respect him anymore. So he has to turn everyone else into Cybermen too. ;)

This is going to be such a long week...

I also assumed the guests were being stunned, not killed.

They stressed that Jackie's earpiece was special ('diamond studded'), given to her for her birthday. I took that to mean it had unique functionality that the standard-issue didn't have. And with Lumic dying and all, he couldn't arrange for all the guests to be similiarly gifted.

Besides, just freezing the guests would have meant no lumbering Cybermen attacks...

Really? Took me over 24 hours. It's about 3am EST when the episodes start showing up in Shareaza. Where are you guys getting'em?

This is public TV we're talking about right? It's not like I ought to feel guilty and go watch some more commercials to make up for downloading the episode.

The beginning was somewhat disjointed- with Mickey feeling completely left out, and the Doctor and Rose being all chummy again despite their fall out last episode.

Well, we don't know how much time has passed between the two episodes. Maybe she got over her disappointment, or at least put it aside for the moment.

Looks like Micky's lost a few pounds. Hope he gets in good shape just in time to be forcibly converted into a cyberman...although I suspect he'd wind up more like Marvin the Paranoid Android. Can't you just picture it?

Sorry, Felon - the mods don't like us to discuss that sort of thing. Just for the record, I plan to buy the DVD sets when they're available here. :)
