Hero Lab is now available for purchase in stores and at the Lone Wolf Development web site at www.wolflair.com. A free demo version of Hero Lab is available for download, so that players can take the software for a spin and "try before they buy".

With Hero Lab, RPG players can create characters, experiment with all the choices available under the selected rules, and orchestrate their characters' evolution. Hero Lab reduces bookkeeping to just a few clicks of the mouse. It automatically tracks changes and modifiers for every stat, ability, item, spell, and option. At the same time, the automated validation rules confirm that all prerequisites, minimums, and other rules requirements are satisfied. With the ability to support virtually any game system and genre, Hero Lab is a revolutionary addition to any player’s RPG library.

Watch for exciting news about games supported by Hero Lab. We'll be making several announcements shortly after the new year!

How long before the authoring tools are available?

Without those a product with just the SRD is almost worthless to me.

Too many books with information that my campaign includes.

If the authoring process is difficult then the tool, no matter how polished will never be adopted by our group.

You're not alone in those sentiments. According to the company, the authoring tools will be released before the end of the year, so that's only about one week to wait. They have said the editing process will be pretty easy, but they also have a full scripting engine to handle all the funky stuff. It will be interesting to see how easy things actually are.

Playing with the demo version makes me think this tool shows a LOT of promise. It does some really nice stuff that other tools don't have. So I'm anxiously awaiting the release of the authoring tools.
