Heroes Feast vs Phantasmal Killer ?

Rashak Mani

First Post
TPK last session... that started with the fact that my uber mage got wiped out 1st round with a Phantasmal Killer.

DM said Heroes Feast works against Fear spell... not fear effects. The description of the spell seems more general thou... fear and hopelessness... since there is no such hopelessness spell one could figure Heroes Feast (6th lvl) would protect me from phantasmal killer (4th lvl).

I rolled a 1 so no help from getting bonuses... :(

Did my DM rule ok ? Heroes feast would be too powerful ? Opinions ?

Heroes’ Feast
Evocation
Level: Clr 6
Components: V, S, DF
Casting Time: 10 minutes
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Effect: Feast for one creature/level
Duration: 1 hour + 12 hours (see text)
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless)

The character brings forth a great feast, including a magnificent table, chairs, service, and food and drink. The feast takes 1 hour to consume, and the beneficial effects do not set in until this hour is over. Those partaking of the feast are cured of all diseases, are immune to poison for 12 hours, and are healed of 1d4+4 points of damage after imbibing the nectarlike beverage that is part of the feast. The ambrosial food that is consumed creates an effect equal to bless that lasts for 12 hours. During this same period, the people who consumed the feast are immune to magical fear and hopelessness.

Heroes' Feast does say that it protects from magical fear, which refers to the Descriptor in the school entry of a spell. In the case of phantasmal killer, the descriptor is [Fear, Mind-Affecting]. Therefore, your character should have been immune to the killer.

Absolutely, unquestionably correct. In the same way that a protection from elements - fire protects from any spell with a [fire] descriptor, the descriptor is the key to telling whether or not a spell will interact with an immunity.

What he said.
If you're immune to fear, you're completely unaffected by all spells with the [Fear] descriptor. (Paladins laugh at Phantasmal Killer.)

Does this make Heroes Feast the most HAVE TO HAVE spell ever then ?

Immune to fear and poison... !

Well my DM disagreed.... TPK on that account.... Ill show him this thread...

Its has its uses but compared to blade barrier and heal/harm its not all that and a bag of pretzels. After all, you have to eat the thing, and in most dungeons, your not going to have the time to stop for an hour and partake of good foods:)

It's a fantastic spell if you know that you're going to face poison and fear that day-- for instance, every party wants to cast this before assaulting a drow citadel.

If you don't encounter those effects though, you just burned a 6th-level slot (and an hour) for a long-duration bless. That's useful, but hardly essential.

Eh, when you have a rope trick, you have all the time you need to eat.

On what basis did he rule that a magical fear spell worked against a spell that makes one immune to magical fear?
