And now that I think of it, hobgoblins go further back, to Birthright.

You have your decades backwards man. Birthright wasn't out until 1995. DragonLance had its first novel out in 1984 and the 1E hardback DragonLance Adventures was in 1987. The Time of the Dragon box set that detailed Taladas was 1990.

When I said "further back", I was comparing the Birthright hobgoblins to the Eberron hobgoblins.

While I think D&D on the whole could benefit from a bit of Asian and African influence, I doubt this is the way to go about it.
Well I'm Asian, so it must be OKAY!

Also, I think black power and Asian power are legitimate political movements, so they totally make valid power sources.
