You guys should really work harder at convincing Reggie that getting the mysterious text tatooed to his body is a BAD IDEA. It's not like you picking out a nifty design for a tramp stamp. Certain tatoos MAY HAVE SERIOUS REPERCUSSIONS!!!! ;)

Ultimately, I think that this may simply be one of those things that Lovercraft detractors and fans will never agree on.

Probably true, but don't assume it is a division between detractors and fans. I really like Lovecraft, but I still think his works aren't unvarnishedly pessimistic. In fact, that's one reason I'm a fan, because I think unvarnished pessimism would be boring. Whereas varnished pessimism (because it's really hard to call the work not pessimistic) can be pretty darn good.

In retrospect, I think that the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Some of Lovecraft's stories have what can be considered 'happy endings' and several more don't.

I wouldn't go so far as to call almost any of his endings happy. Some just end in survival and victory, but I wouldn't say Lovecraft is much on the 'happy'.
