Heroscape. Cool or not cool?

It's a one off type combat game. You build the terrain (there are plans in the game manual to make some) set up the combat scenario (comes with that too) and go at it. There are two modes of game play, simple and advanced. I would say though, this game it geared toward younger players. We got it for my son last Christmas (he's 10) and have a lot of fun with it. He builds his own terrains and battle scenes, we play, he slaughters me, rinse and repeat.

I play with my son. We have a good time and he generally enjoys the game quite a bit.

It would be fun once in a while with an older crowd, but it isn't going to be a huge stretch of your tactical skills. Still plenty of fun with smack talk and lucky die rolls though.

While I agree that the game is simpler than DDM, once you start buying all the expansions, it offers more strategic possiblities than the master set. Also, there are plenty of altenate scenarios on-line that enhance that aspect of the game. That said, it appears (I've only played a handful of times) to require less tactical and strategic thought than DDM, but I think that would be different if I played more and against more adults.

I've only played it once, though I did enjoy it quite a bit. I've been planning to bop down to the Toy store and look at that and McFarlane's dragons to see if they'd make for cheap minis. Scale is different than DDM, though.

One thing I'll note was in the game I played it was just a big contest--see who can kill who else first. A lot of RPGers dislike competitive games and prefer the cooperative aspects of D&D and other RPGs. I don't know that Heroscape will suppose this in the way that the old HeroQuest boardgame, or Warhammer Quest did.

I concur with pretty much everyone else. Good game.

I originally bought it for the terrain system. But the rules are actually not bad! Simple enough to remember in your head, but with enough tactical details to satisfy the grognard in me.

It's a really fun game. I think the people who say it's for kids need to keep in mind is that it's not a war game; it's a board game.

Its for kids because the box says Ages 8 and up. :) My son (who was 9 at the time we got it) took to it right away. I'm 36 and qualify for the "and up" part in spades and enjoy it as well.
