Hexer (MotW) anyone?

Why not

"the character must be able to perform a gaze attack". :)

Well, since the Hexer only gets the Gaze Attack after joining the PrC, making it a pre-requisite would seem rather self-defeating :)

The other reason for not saying "X levels of Y class" is that there may be more than one way to qualify, given that there is a lot of third-party material out there and thus a goodly number of ways to get there.

Well, any gaze attack will do. There have to be some arcane/divine gaze spell in the books. Atleast I hope so. :)

Eyebite leaps out as the obvious one - after all, the Hexer's powers are essentially multiple Eyebites per day. However, that's Brd 6, Sor/Wiz 6, so a bit too high-level for a Prc pre-req.

The other problem is that basing it on having a gaze attack (which is thematically very appropriate) opens it up to all sorts of classes that WotC were deliberately trying to exclude (and which I think probably should be excluded from a game balance angle - a straight Wizard / Hexer would be nasty ... and I can see people running out and creating 1st level gaze attack spells so that they could get into the PrC really quickly. Eyebite once a day at 4th level would be rather imbalancing.

well then you just make sure that you have a BaB req.

Familiar

A much better option might be to replace it with:

Spellcasting: the character must be able to cast 3rd level divine spells
Special: the character must have a familiar

Since Adepts are the only divine casters who receive a familiar as a class ability, this would require any Cleric or Druid who wanted to become a Hexer to take at least one level of Wizard or Sorcerer. That would make the class less attractive to the 'standard' divine casters without excluding them completely.

Actually, I was looking into taking Mystic Wanderer (MoF) as I thought it was really a cool class for a Lliran cleric, and as it turns out, they get a familiar as a class ability. It doesn't advance unless you then switch to wizard/sorcerer, which just seems odd to me, but still.

Well, plus, the idea of a charisma-based Mystic Wanderer/Hexer is just a little odd itself.

It's also easily circumvented, since a player simply need persuade their DM of the need for a "Storms" clerical domain, and then make sure Lightning Bolt gets onto the list - putting it in as a 4th level spell sounds fair. :)

Isn't there a domain already in print that gets lightning bolt?

Not in the PHB. (The Air domain has Chain Lightning at 6th - you might be thinking of that) ... but there's a lot of other product out there by now, so it is quite possible you could find it somewhere.

I got it! A Fire Shugenja from OA gets lightning bolt as a 4th level spell. So that means you have to be a L8 Fire shugenja with a savage species. The only problem is getting the Wilderness Lore ranks. You'd have to either have Cosmopolitan or multiclass as one level of Barbarian, Ranger or Druid at level 9.

Of course, no DM in their right mind would let you do this... *pout*

;)
