Hey, help me name this class concept.

As I'm always playing around with new system/design concepts I always run into the problem with names.

Right now, just on my free time, I'm scraping all the melee jobs of DnD(among other things) and pretty much making 6 versions of Fighter, each with a close alignment with a stat. These jobs have a lot of feats and class abilities are always choices, just like a Ranger's "Combat Style". Also I'm making an Archer/Ranger class, so that doesn't matter in this.

My goal with the names is that they are as basic as possible. I'm OCD about this, so "Rogue" or "Duelist" doesn't really fit the bill, neither does the vague "Fighter" or "Warrior".

The STR melee is called "Brute", your basic basher with a lot of Power Attack, Charging, and Bull Rushing love. The CHR melee is "Inspirer", with, among other things, Knightly challenges and a twist on the Inspire abilities of Bard(instead of just singing, you lead by example, you get in a good hit on someone, everyone in your group gets an attack bonus). Get the idea?

Well, I'm having a trouble naming the DEX, CON, and WIS melees.

DEX - just as Brute is your everything bash-em-up, I want this job to be the iconic finesse fighter, may it be with sneak attacks, fencing, muscle cutting, ect. They are quick and resourceful. Some 'combat styles' that come to mind: Fencer/Duelist, Assassin/Surgeon(knows just where to cut), and Back-Stabber(Sneak Attack, but also someone who uses Hide to the best of their ability in combat).

CON - I want someone who pushes their body to the limits on this one. Berserkers... but also religious fanatics. This may seem in the WIS area, with "mind over body", but considering how it will be their CON mod which will be limiting them, not their WIS, this is a CON class. Hard to take down, especially when they get worked up. Fanatic was my original idea, but I wonder if someone could do better. Some 'combat styles' that come to mind: Berserker, Fanatic(religious twist on Berserker), and Defender(defensive twist on Berserker).

WIS - In the concept world I'm making these, Chi (also known as Qi or Ki) is very real. Magic is based on Chi. Every fighting style uses it whether they know it or not, but the WIS melee class is all about it. They use it to read people's movements, to know what pressure points to hit, and to even cure wounds. Combat styles would be based on the many Asian martial arts that focus on Chi, especially empty hand combat.

So Enworld, name away ;o.

DEX: Swashbuckler
CON: Knight (no berserking, but trades damage for hanging around in melee and protecting)
WIS: Veteran (if wis represents being extra skilled in combat) or Sensi (the kung-fu look)

DS

DEX: Swashbuckler, Master, Mongoose, Weasel, Whip, Executioner, Quickling, Harrier

CON: Iron, Bear, Boar, Berserker, Armoragor, Deathless, Tough S.o.B., Bastion

WIS: Master, Perceiver, Reader, Watchful, Focused, Battle Walker, Blade Strider, Champion, Sensei, Sifu

Good luck.

I kind of hoping for one name that covers all the fields.

Like "Quickling" would the closest thing for DEX I guess, but I don't think anyone wants to be called a "Quickling" ;p. "Focused" is what I had in mind for the WIS melee as well, but something about it doesn't fit.

I couldn't name a religious Fanatic a Berserker and I couldn't name a Berserker a religious Fanatic, but they both come from the same class. This is my ordeal.

What the heck's OCD mean, anyway?

Brute, Cavalier, Mauler, Rampager, Breaker, or Trouncer for Strength.

Executor, Executioner, Harrier, Dispatcher, Skirmisher, Interceptor, Knave, Striker, Gladiator, or Hunter for Dexterity.

Juggernaught, Tough, Partisan, Gladiator, Stalwart, Bastion, Ardent, or Zealot for Constitution.

Tactician, Strategist, Coordinator, Interceptor, Savant, Manipulator, or Deceiver for Intelligence.

Adept, Mystic, Interceptor, Oracle, Intuitive, Channeler, Focuser, Manipulator, or Conductor for Wisdom.

Leader, Phalanx, Marshal, Warder, Warden, Motivator, Coordinator, or Manipulator for Charisma. (inspirer sucks for a name)

Would be easier if using two-word names or combination words.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Like TV's Monk.

I agree, once words like "agile" and "unstoppable" come into play, things become easier. If its easier to fuse all these concepts under one name, then go ahead. I'm stomped myself.

If Inspirer isn't enough, I might go with "Symbol" or "Icon".

I'm working on something similar for a campaign with a military focus, but made 12 classes out of the various pairs of abilities that had at least one physical ability.

My names are currently:
STR, DEX - Weapon Master (don't like this name, based on the power / finesse dichotomy)
STR, CON - Juggernaut (stronger and tougher than anyone)
STR, INT - Tactician (knowledgable application of power)
STR, WIS - Zealot (dedicated + forceful)
STR, CHA - Instigator (intimidation + leading the way)
DEX, CON - Martial Artist (don't particularly like this name either, based on fitness + athleticism)
DEX, INT - Surgical Striker (don't like the name, based on intelligence and accuracy)
DEX, WIS - Opportunist (emphasizing spot / listen, quick reflexes)
DEX, CHA - Combat Dancer (movement + showmanship)
CON, INT - Relentless Warrior (based on learning + not being fatigued easily)
CON, WIS - Protector (endurance + dedication)
CON, CHA - Daredevil (showing off of toughness)

Str: Strong Hero

Dex: Fast Hero

Con: Tough Hero

Int: Smart Hero

Wis: Dedicated Hero

Cha: Pretty Hero

This list has been brought to you by the number 20 and the letter d, and the word Modern.

Cheers, -- N
