Hidden Magic [Metamagic] (see revision below)

Hidden Illusion [Metamagic]

Prerequisites: Gnome, Spell Focus (Illusion)

This feat, when applied to illusion spells, makes them not register as magical when viewed with a detect magic spell or effect.

A hidden illusion uses up a spell slot two levels higher than the spell's actual level.

Looks good. It's a little limited in usefulness, though, unless your game has a ton of mages running around using Detect Magic on everything that moves. I think a +1 spell level should be more than enough for it.

My logic was that it's Nystul's magic aura (reversed) on top of a regular spell. So for, say, a permanent illusion that couldn't be detected, it would be the regular level +1 (for the aura) + 1 for combining the effects of two spells.

But yes, +2 is a big bump.

And yeah, it's a highly specialized feat that I figure will mostly be an NPC thing. I'm toying with just coming up with no-magic-aura upgrades of the standard illusion spells instead.

i'd get rid of gnome as a prerequistes add Craft: Drawing, Painting,or simuler 4 ranks and have no level bump i'd say thats about right after all if your PCs wouldn't take it why would your villans

Sounds like an interesting feat however illusions do not need to have detect magic cast upon them to realize they aren't real. Many illusions require simple interaction with them, even permanent image, which functions like silent image allowing a will save when interacted with, allows a save.
So a mage interacts with the illusion, thinks its magical so he casts detect magic but does not register as magic. Then he interacts with it, allowing a will save, and makes his save, so he notices its fake. What good does this feat do?
Also, Magic Aura makes items register as non-magic already (or a magic item of a kind you specify, or the subject of a spell you specify). Only difference between what you want to do is that Magic Aura only effects items. I would say just writing a spell with a magic aura attached to it would be the preferred method or something of the like. Maybe you can make a feat that changes illusion spells to require a second will save, if they pass the original, in order to disbelieve. Perhaps make this one a 2 level increase in illusion spells.

I aware. I'm specifically focused on foiling the "fly around with detect magic on to find the permanent illusion covering the entrance" thing.

Well detect magic requires concentration, so they would have to use arcane sight unless someone is carrying them? If you seriously have issues with this problem just tack magic aura on permanent image for +1 spell level, you can even make this a metamagic feat that applies to illusion(figments) only.

It's explicitly stated that merging the effects of two spells requires an additional bump in level beyons simply adding spell levels together.

You are the DM you can make the call on it. Just because it is suggested to ad an additional 1 level to the spell does not mean you need to do it, especially with two weak spells.

Also where is the rules on combining spell effects, dmg?

+2 is a lot for this one -- it is a good effect, but really its most powerful use is to remove some cheesy tactics rather than to augment traditional functionality. For example, an invisible subject can be (sorta) located with detect magic (0-level spell) rather than see invisibility. This feat removes that loophole. But it's certainly no stronger than a Silent dimension door.
