Hide Life?......

Is it just me or is this spell a little to good for a non epic spell?

Even without doing any hocus pocus and hiding the removed body part on some hidden dimension incased in solid stone, the spell pretty much makes sure you won't die. Heck, you won't even fall unconscience.

I know you are still vulnerable to other hazards (Death effects, transformation, charm etc) but for the most part, monsters don't have acsess to that stuff (70% of them at least). But that is still one heck of a protective spell.

Am I alone in this?

I think it even foils death effects.

I always make a joke with this spell, when my low to mid level chars start looking for a scroll of hide life... no DM has ever allowed me to get one, tho! I really wonder why!?

This spell should be reserved for villains! Can make for a great plot device for higher level adventures!

In a game where 9th level spells are being cast, death is only a disease with a 5,000gp cure. Hide Life is fine at those high levels of play, since it hardly changes matters much. Death is no longer the main way for enemies to overcome PCs anyway, since they seem to always come back.

You almost have to trick or forcesomeone to remove themselves from the equation in order to win as a villain at that level. There are effects taht will cause true and final death though, which even this spell can't avoid.

In some ways, Hide Life is dangerous. If you go -10 or less, you are permantley staggered, and can do nothing but partial actions. At the very least, you would have to get a Raise type spell cast on yourself, if not end False Life and then get Raised. Think about how easy it would be for someone to capture you in that condition, and then trap you some how. You cannot be found or rescued because the enemy was too good hiding you. You cannot be Raised, because you are still alive. You cannot even hope your friends will end the spell for you, as you hid the finger or what have you too well. Imagine being at the bottom of a volcano for all eternity. Try teleporting out of that one.
