This town will serve as a base for my latest game, Looking for more ideas...
Hillcrest: Large Town, Population 2,569 Power Center: Conventional, Racial Mix: 79% Human, 9%Halfling, 5% Elf, 3% Dwarf, 2% Gnome, 1% Half-Elf, 1% Half-Orc
Hillcrest is a bordertown no less then a fortnight from any major city and is located in the rolling, forested area known as The March(es?). It has a local constabulary and town guard. The highest ranking priest at the Hall of the Judge's Scale also serves as local magistrate. A twelve foot high wooden pallisade surrounds the town and as access from both north and south (Northgate and Southgate). The town is of moderate size and offers all sorts of adventuring supplies. There is an Apothecary for herbs and spell components, an Alchemist for potions and elixirs. There are also a few temples/shrines dedicated to various non-evil deities. In addition to the spellcaster's resources, there are a few weaponsmiths and armorers. The only other "store" to note is a curio shop that is rumored to carry a magical device or two every now and again. There are a number of festhalls/taverns as well as a handful of inns and a decent sized market place.
The Green Dragon's Roost is known for it's raucous clientele and upstairs brothel, the Roost, as it's often referred, is a favorite of adventurers. The Roost is owned by a half-elf called Mr. F. Swearingen (the F is for Foxworthy, think "Hippy-Elf Chick's" bastard son). Swearingen opened the Roost about 10 years ago after a "long adventuring career" (he was really a con-man ie. CN Expert6/Rogue2). He won the deed to the property in an underhanded game of dice... (Possible tie-in later).
The Old Drunken Ogre is a tavern of the seediest kind. Dark, smokey, and pretty foul smelling. The beverages are all of poor quality and the only food available is gruel and day-old bread. Ran by Dwarf named Dexter Slade (CN Warrior4/Expert2), though no one in town knows his first name and just call him Slade.
The Purple Grotto is another festhall, though a step up from the Roost. It is ran by a human female calling herself simply, Synthia (CN Bard8). She is very attractive and enigmatic. The thing at the Grotto is the availability of mind altering substances (think rave club, and check BoVD).
The Market Street Pub is located in the market (duh) and is owned and operated by Alyssa Sylvanest an elven female (NG Commoner5). Alyssa is also very attractive but holds to her mantra of finding the "right man". She runs a nice little place that serves great salads (yes chicken salads!) as well fat a$$ hamburgers.
There are a few guildhalls as well. The Guild of the Cloven Shield (fighters guild) headed by Gavin Cromwell a male human (NG Warrior10) , the Guild of the Arcane Order (wizards/sorcerers guild) headed by Mistress Morgana Le'Roi (LN Sorceress11), and there is also a very small contigent of rogues that claim affiliation with a larger guild in the big city (duh, need another city & guild name here too) that is ran by a human male called Redo Nightshade (CN Rogue9).
Aleca's Attic is a curio shop run by Aleca (NG Adept9). No one has ever heard her last name, but Aleca is an elderly human woman who has been in Hillcrest as long as anyone can remember. Her shop is in fact in her attic and has a fair chance of carrying a magic item or two (completely random and nothing too extreme).
Longbottom's Apothecary is ran by Harvey Longbottom, a halfling "herbalist" (CN Adept6). Harvey is also a direct descendant of Mr. Harold P. Longbottom, founder of the extremely potent Longbottom Leaf. Harvey will not flaunt this info about carelessly as he would have half the town pestering him day and night for the hard to get Halfling pipeweed (yes, stolen from LotR).
Wexley's Potions, Oils, and Elixirs is owned and operated by Anton Wexley (LE Wizard9) a human with a sinister air about him. Wexley has a very large lizard familiar named Mojo that likes small furry animals for lunch.
The Inn of the Long Road is probably the nicest public facility in town other then the temples. Ran by Madame Garrit the inn is always clean and inviting. Madame Garrit is like everyone's favorite aunt. She dotes on her guests like they were family and looks past external appearances. She is a retired priestess (LG Cleric7), a little more overweight then she should be, and so nice as to almost be annoying.
The Traveler's Waystop is another inn. Known primarily for it's economical prices and identical rooms (think Motel 6). The place is owned by someone in "the big city" but is managed by Norman Gates (CN Commoner3), an odd middle-aged human male... (yes, like Psycho and left open purposely).
The Corner is what the unfortunates who have had to stay there call this run down building. More of a delapidated flop-house then an inn, this place is as filthy as a kobolds cave. There really is no staff at this place, though Slade will come down on occasion and "collect" from his tenants (he owns the building).
Ehlonna's Blessing is a garden-temple in the forest just outside town. Five minutes on horseback from the southern gate Priestess Winifred Leafwalker, a Half-Elf female (LN Druid9) tends to the flowers, plants, and animals within her temple. She will care for those that treat nature with respect, especially while in her garden-temple. She is also exceptionally beautiful...
Hall of the Judge's Scale is a fairly large, and imposing stone structure in the center of the town square. This building acts as a temple to (insert LN deity here) as well as the local magistrate. High Magistrate Delbert Evanhans (LN Cleric10/Aristocrat2) is known for his swift, but just rulings. He does support capital punishment and local displays of discipline, though he is very thorough on these matters. These halls also provide curative blessings from the Judge, for a marginal donation of course.
The Constable's Headquarters is a moderate sized building near the the Judge's Scale that serves as a base for the town guard. It is headed by Constable Orenthal Grug a male Half-Orc (LN Fighter8/Aristocrat1). This building also has a jail with 8 cells underneath the foundation as well as living quarters for up to 20 guards.
Market Square is where local artisans, farmers, and merchants sell their wares. The market opens at dawn and closes at dusk, except for special occasions.
Hillcrest Metalworks serves as the local blacksmith and is owned and operated by Deiter Hammerheim (NG Dwarf Warrior3/Expert6). Deiter has been known to forge some exceptional armor. He employs his two sons, both of whom show promise in the family trade.
Gerbo's Exquisite Gems and Jewels is the only such place in Hillcrest. It is operated by Gerbo Ningel Sparklegem (NG Gnome Expert8), who also will tell patrons he is the founder, owner, and proprietor of said establishment. Gerbo's custom pieces are exceptional and come with a high price. (This place has lots of wards and traps). Gerbo is an oddball, he is extremely nearsighted and wears very thick "coke-bottle" spectacles.
Adventure Ideas
When Monsters Attack - Humaniods attack the town (and the party must lead the charge to repel them). Lots of Orcs (and Kobolds?) on hangliders>
but not before
Missing Persons - Slavers kidnapping people (with the monsters above). Monsters enslaving demihumans... Ogres and Ogre Magi>
and
The Holy Grail - A religous artifact has gone missing (after the attack). Judge's Helm (as Helm of Telepathy except detects lies instead of sending telepathic message. To be worn by High Magistrate only in situations where the truth is clouded ).
