Historical Importance...D&D

Gary, just so's you're not worried or anything, I've got our first meeting all planned out. I'm just going to hover nearby until I can tell you're getting a tad worn down by the war stories. Then I'll give you a nod and say, "Let's blow this popstand and go grap a couple Bombay Saphire Martinis with blue-cheese stuffed olives."

Heh, Rel!

Hovering is indeed the term to use for many shy fans. I just wave them in and assure them I won't bite. Now lurking is different. Those who do that are the dreaded ones, for I know that they want at least an hour of my undivided attention so as to regale me with the marvels of their PC's performance or the horrors of that of their GM or fellow players. Worse still, expounding on what I could have done better in writing the RPG they play, or details of their own "new" system.

Then, when I've got a couple drinks in you, you'll be much more receptive to my own repetitive and boring war-stories. ;) [/QUOTE

Quite so! Fact is that some of the gaming tales are amusing, and the parameters for attaining that merit broaden considerably with each Bombay Sapphire martini

Drop by one of the North Carolina Game Days and you'll even get a chance to meet Henry. He's less boring than me but he doesn't drink martinis. Nobody's perfect I guess. ;)

While it isn't too likely, it so happens that my friend Joe Martin, the world's most prolific cartoonist according to the Guiness Book of Records, has a place on the North Carolina coast. He's there now, and we are invited to visit the Martin's whenever they are there. How close are the NCGDs to Cape Fear?

Cheerio,
Gary

Mr. E. Gary Gygax,

Thank you for that piece of background information on Tuerny; much appreciated.

Thomas

Welcome Thomas:)

Feel free to address me as Gary if you like.

Using dramatic names for NPCs is a divice that auhtors use much as squirrels store up nuts for the winter. When it is time to write about something and no ideas are at hand, just go to the list of unexplained people, places, and things, pick one that seems promising and develop it :o

Gary

Morning, Gary. I managed to spot your post before I head out to do some yard work.

I'm afraid that Cape Fear is what we locals would call a "fer piece" from here. Not vastly distant but still probably 2&1/2 hours at least. The best I can say is that you'd likely be flying into the RDU airport before either renting a car to drive down to the coast (I recommend this - there's some pretty country between here and there) or taking a smaller plane to the Wilmington airport. Either way, if you decide to make the trip, let me know. There's a bar or two out near the airport where one might procure a Bombay Saphire martini. ;)

Hell, if you come on a weekend, I'll drive you down myself. :D

Just wanted to chime in on the silly names discussion:

My very first PC, back in 1987 when I was introduced to AD&D 1e, was a paladin (rolled up cold turkey, lucky 17 Cha!!!) named :::drumroll::: Bulldozer Crane!

The DM had a halfling thief NPC named Lux Light-Hands

And in my AD&D 2e DMing days, one of my players had a character named Cannon.

When Cannon died, he brought in Cannon's twin brother, Shannon.

When Shannon pushed up daisies, it was revealed that the brothers were triplets, with Cannon's and Shannon's twin Lennon joining the fray...

And back then the table had 9 players and a combat round took 40 minutes...

Good Morning to You, Rel:)

Appreciate the information and the offer!

If we do venture out your way likely we'll motor east from Wisconsin...unless we take a winter trip when flying is the only way to go.

Cheers,
Gary

Well, if this coversation has departed from puns and moved on to silly PC names, I'll share my bit. When I was 10 or so a friend and I played Curse of the Azure Bonds on his Commadore64. We started and restarted games all the time, just for the heck of it. We got to the point of just randomly pushing our hands on the keyboard when it came time to choose the character's names - it was just too much trouble thinking of real ones.

Thus, the fighter TYRC was born. We ended up pronouncing it Tyrac, but TYRC was the proper way to spell it, capital letters and all. TYRC survived many reincarnations, and made the transition from computer to tabletop and back several times. For some reason, that name just struck us as enormously funny, yet distinctinve. We always knew that, whatever party we had, TYRC was the big badass buff fighter dude.

Well, if that's the case then we're definately on the way to Cape Fear. If you draw a line on your US map, we're practically in a direct line between Wisconsin and Cape Fear! (I'll note that more than likely you don't travel in direct lines very often unless you have a Carpet of Flying. ;) )

NC Game Day IV is on May 8, so you've got time to make your travel arrangements. We'd love to have you. :D

Hi Rel,

As I am really involved in a major creative project or two now it's not likely that we'll be going much of any place this year. Maybe next, or the year after. Heh, I just turned down a paid trip to France because of writing demands...

Cheers,

No problem, Gary. Last I checked, North Carolina isn't going anywhere and the NC Game Days certainly show no sign of slowing down. We'll be here if the wanderlust calls you.

Until then, happy writing! :D
