As MonsterMash said, within 30 miles for most Europeans there's an awful lot of history. Thinking about it, the most famous near me is probably Hadrian's Wall. Seventy three miles of fortified wall built in 122AD to keep the barbarians out of the Roman Empire. It's a World Heritage Site and worth visiting if you ever visit Northumberland.
