History of the Phasm?

I'm doing some research on the Phasm for a writing project. Does anyone know of previous or prior appearances of the phasm in official literature? Old monster manuals, modules, or dragon articles? Or are they new to 3e?

wasn't there something called the Phasm from Basic D&D? related, or not?

According to Dragon Magazine, the phasm first appeared in the 3rd Edition Monster Manual. The information appears in Dragon Magazine #343 (May 2006), page 13 and 15, in the "Knowledge Check" Question and Answer section.

That's a plasm, not a phasm.
