Yes, I know computers can handle granular systems better than people. But why program all that crud, and get it just as wrong alot of the time as tabletop RPGs do, when you can keep it simple? One of the big problems with MMOs is the same as DnD, you get six months down the line and realize that the systems are screwed. Star Wars Galaxies anyone? WoW updates like nothing else tweaking everything.

But if you have a simple underlying system that is easy to adjust everything goes smoother and you can spend more time in other areas... like expanding the world, tweaking abilities, introducing more player options, improving graphics, etc. Elegant simplicity is always better than overwhelming complexity.
