Hit dice

If we're rolling hit points, then I think the current model is best - different hit dice for different classes.

I don't think an M&M-style damage save would work for D&D. Hit points truly are a sacred cow.

My preference, though, is for fixed hit points per level. I hate rolling hit points - I invariably roll a '1'. However, that's trivially easy to house rule, so if the game doesn't do it for me, I can fix it myself.

The current model is flat HP. So if the wizard wants more up than a fighter he better invest in constitution like mad, rather than watch the fighter roll badly.

I almost wish they could balance the game in some way that you don't have to add your stats to damage rolls. I'd love for longswords to always do 1d8, not 1d8+17 (strength + enhancement + feats + power bonuses, etc.).

So a fighter with a 10 strength and a fighter with an 19 strength do the same damage?

I suppose one alternative would be to let characters super-size their dice based on their ability scores. So instead of getting a +1, you'd go from a d8 to a d10, etc. Obviously this system would suffer from the lack of a d14, d16, and d18...
